What is the first step in the Scientific Method?

Observation

100

What two words should the Hypothesis always contain?

if/then

100

True or False An experiment should be tested multiple times

True

100

What is the Scientific Method?

the process of objectively establishing facts through testing and experimentation

100

True or False Scientists do not actually use the Scientific Method in real life

False

200

What is the last step in the scientific method?

Results Analysis/ report findings

200

What is this an example of: The scientists reported their findings to several scientific journals

Reporting results to other scientists

200

What is the difference between an inference and an observation

Observation - what we see

inference - the reasoning or assumption of why we see something happening

200

What is an example of a question?

?

200

What are some ways you can organize data?

Graph, Table, Pie Chart etc.

300

After you have a question/problem, what is the next step of the scientific method?

Gather Background Information

300

Write an example of a hypothesis

if...then...

300

What is an Independent Variable?

What we CHANGE in the experiment

300

What is a Dependent Variable?

What is being Measured

300

What is a Control Variable?

What we keep the SAME

400

After you form a Hypothesis what do you do?

Experiment

400

What is this an example of:  The scientists thought that if a certain food dye was used commonly in snack foods then it could be the cause of hair loss in the consumers.

Hypothesis

400

What is this an example of: High School students consume a large amount of snacks that contain this food dye. Many if these students also complained of thinning hair.

Observation

400

What is this an example of: Scientists at a leading university were concerned about a new artificial food coloring on the market. Did this food coloring cause side effects such as hair loss in the people that consume them?

Question

400

What is this an example of: The scientists read about all of the tests that had been done on food dye before it was released to the market.

Gathering Background Information

500

After you Experiment what is the next step in the scientific method?

Analysis of Data

500

What is this an example of: The amount of food dye consumed by the mice was measured as well as the amount of hair before and after the consumption. The group of mice that received the dye had 63%  more hair loss than the group that consumed no dye. Also observed was the group given the dye had 53% more dandruff and skin related issues than the other group.

Analysis of Data

500

What is this an example of: Because human subjects can be hard to study, mice were used. One group of lab mice was given the food dye and the other group was not. All of the mice were placed in the same homes and living conditions.

Experiment

500

What is this an example of: When the results were analyzed the scientists found that the mice exposed to the food dye had five times the amount of hair loss compared to the control mice. Based on this data they determined that the food dye contributed to hair loss.

Conclusion

500

Write all of the steps of the Scienitific Method in Order

1. Observation 2. Question 3. Gather Background Information 4. Hypothesis 5. Experiment 6. Analysis of Data 7. Conclusion 8. Report their findings
