This is the variable that is kept the same throughout the experiment
What is a controlled variable?
This part of the Scientific Method where the scientist makes an prediction about what might happen during the experiment.
What is a hypothesis?
Does fertilizer make a pea plant grow taller (height)? Testable or not?
What is testable?
In the independent variable of an experiment you have both the experimental group and control group. The control group is what is being kept the same or controlled compared to the experimental group that is being alter or experimented with. What is the control group in the following scenario? How does the presence of the secret ingredient in the tooth paste affect the quality of breath?
What is the group without the secret ingredient?
Mr. Jones has blue eyes. Observation or inference?
What is an observation?
This is the variable of the experiment that was changed on purpose.
What is an independent variable?
This part of the Scientific Method involves sharing the findings of the experiment with others.
What is a conclusion/discussion?
Does changing the height of the ramp affect the speed of the car going down the ramp? Is this testable? If so, what is the independent variable?
What is testable? What is the height of the ramp?
What do you call when a group of people receive a sugar pill instead of the actual pill?
What is the placebo effect?
The heart makes a thump sound. Observation or inference?
What is an inference?
The variable that is affected by the manipulated variable.
What is a dependent variable and this variable is measured during the experiment?
This part of the lab report gives a detailed list of what to do during the experiment.
What is a procedure/method?
Does the temperature of water affect the time it takes a sugar cube to dissolve? Is it testable? If so, what is the dependent variable?
What is testable. What is the time it takes for the sugar cube to dissolve?
I grew two apple trees over the summer. One tree received fertilizer and the other one did not. The tree that was fertilized grew more apples. The group that received fertilizer represents which group of the independent variable?
What is an experimental group?
This is why an observation can be proven.
What is is gives facts using the 5 senses?
I hypothesize that more birds will come to my back yard if I install a bird feeder. What is the dependent variable?
What is the number of birds?
What are the two criteria of a testable question?
What is measurable and specific?
Do vitamins affect the weight of a puppy? What is the manipulated variable?
What is puppies who get vitamins versus puppies that do not get vitamins?
Question: What is the effect of different temperatures on sunflower plant growth? What is the dependent variable in this experiment?
What is the sunflower plant growth?
Give an example of an observation and inference.
depends of answer
Testable Question: Does changing the height of the ramp affect the speed of the car going down the ramp? What are 3 controlled variables?
What is the same type of car, same ramp surface, same driver?
Explain, in order, all of the steps in the scientific method.
1.Observe andTestable Question
2. ResearchHypothesis
3. Develop Experiment/Procedure
4. Data Collection
5. Data Analysis
6. Conclusion/Discussion (share your knowledge with others)
Question: Will a rocket go higher? This is not a testable question, this would be the rewording of this question to make it a testable question and this would be the dependent variable.
Will changing the size of a rocket affect how far the rocket fly and what is the how far the rocket will fly in distance?
This is the difference between a law and a theory in science.
What is a scientific theory is a well-tested concept that explains a wide range of observations. A theory typically withstands repeated tests, but sometimes the tests will fail to support the theory so then scientists will change the theory or abandon the theory. The best supported theories withstand repeated tests and a scientific law describes an observed pattern in nature, but does not provide an explanation for it. A scientific law is a statement that describes what scientists expect to happen every time under a particular set of conditions.
Example: In the Law of Superposition his law states that in a horizontal rock layer, the oldest layer is at the bottom. Scientists repeat this test over and over and always find it to be true.
