Welles went as far as "reporting" that Martians had emerged from a downed ship at a farm in Grover's Mill, NJ and fried police and onlookers with a death ray, as well as overwhelmed the U.S. military in NYC and released poison gas on the city, as well as Chicago and St. Louis. The FCC launched an investigation but found no laws were brokend and Welles issued a public apology.
