What is significant about the Shape?

The three-point design of the top half is like the north point of an old sailor's compass. This shows that a Scout is able to point the right way in life as truly as the compass points it in the field.

What is the Patrol Method?

The Patrol is a group of Scouts who belong to a Troop and who are similar in age, development, and interests. The Patrol Method allows Scouts to interact in a small group outside the larger Troop context, working together as a team and sharing the responsibility of making their Patrol a success. A Patrol takes pride in its identity, and the members strive to make their Patrol the best it can be.

Simple cuts and scrapes

  1. Stop the Bleeding - Most minor cuts stop bleeding on their own.  In the case that you can not stop the bleeding, apply pressure to the wound with a clean cloth or bandage for 10 - 20 minutes.  If the cut is 1/4 inch or deeper and muscle is showing, apply pressure and get medical attention for stitches.
  2. Clean the Wound - Wash the wound with clean water and soap.
  3. Apply Triple Antibiotic Ointment - The use of triple antibiotic helps your wound from not becoming infected.
  4. Cover the Wound - Bandages can help keep the wound clean and keep harmful bacteria out. After the wound has healed enough to make infection unlikely, exposure to the air will speed wound healing.
  5. Change the Dressing - Change the dressing at least daily or whenever it becomes wet or dirty.

What are Three Types of Patrols

New Scout patrol. That might be a patrol of brand new Scouts who just moved up from a Webelos den, or it might be a group from a recruiting night that all joined together where they learn some basic skills as they join the troop.

Traditional patrols. These are Scouts in that middle age group that are about the same age, have some similar interests and they work together to do things and learn advancement together.

Older scout patrol. These are Scouts, say 14 years and older, who have been in the patrol for a while and have moved up into troop leadership positions.

Blisters on the hand and foot

1.  First, wash your hands and “glove-up” if possible.

2.  Next, clean the area to be treated with an antiseptic, soap and water, or whatever you have that works.

3.  Sterilize a pin with flame or rubbing alcohol (remember that rubbing alcohol is flammable, so be careful!).

4.  You want to leave as much of the skin intact as possible, so avoid piercing the blister from the top.  Instead, insert the pin into the side of the blister.

5.  With the blister “popped,” take some gauze and gently push down on the blister to help squeeze out the fluid.

6.  Now, make sure the area is clean.  Bandage up the area as best as possible and pile on the protective padding.   Make every attempt to minimize further injury to the area.  Keep it clean and try to rest it for as long as possible.

7.  Tylenol or Motrin can help with pain. Note: You’ll need parental consent to take medication at a Scout event.

Have the victim sit up and lean forward to keep blood from draining into the throat. Have him softly blow out any clots. Pinch the soft part of the nostrils together to prevent the flow. Apply a cool wet cloth or ice to the note and adjacent parts of the face.

If the bleeding is severe or if there are other injuries to the face and head, position the victim to keep blood out of the airway, treat for shock and call for help.

What is the significance of the scroll and knot?

The scroll is turned up at the ends to remind us of the corners of a Scout's mouth raised in a smile as he does his duty. The Scout motto is printed across the scroll.

Hanging from the bottom of the scroll on the Second Class Scout rank badge and First Class Scout rank badge is a knot.  The purpose of the knot is to remind a scout to do a Good Turn Daily, similarly to a person tieing a string around their finger to remember something.
