Let us start at the very beginning, a very good place to start. When God began the creation, this was the first sentence He spoke.

Let there be light.

Stop me if this sounds familiar. This number of accounts of the Savior's life and ministry found at the start of the new testament are strikingly close together, and for good reason.

No smoking, no drinking, no drugs, no coffee, no tea. This is the simplest (albeit still flawed) way to describe the Word of Wisdom as found in this section.

Quite the oxymoron, don't cha think? Joseph and Hyrum Smith along with several other early church leaders awaited trial during the historically cold winter of 1838-1839 in this Missouri prison.

Talk about symbolism. When Christ took the penalty for our sins when He died, He also more physically stood in the place of this man who though charged with sedition (the same crime Christ was crucified for), was released to the Jews on their insistence of receiving him instead of Christ as their released prisoner.

Barrabas.

The prophet is dead. This news brought great sadness to the saints when they learned of Joseph Smith's death, but in his announcement of the martyrdom, John Taylor took the opportunity to credit the Prophet of the Restoration for having done more for the salvation of the earth than any man, save this one.

Jesus Christ.

Not one of the three witnesses ever denied their testimonies of the Book of Mormon, even though each one left the church at some point. This one never returned.

Don't laugh at his name now, but this conqueror in the book of Mormon was decapitated and struggled for breath before he died.

Shiz.

Don't get me wrong, parts of this prophet's life must have sucked (living off of food brought to him by crows for several years for starters), but being given the sealing power by God because He knows you won't ask for anything wrong has got to be a pretty sweet deal.

Elijah.

As recorded in John 18, when Jesus was arrested He asked "Whom seek ye?" and was told they sought Jesus of Nazareth. He then said, "I am he." Following this pronouncement they were thrown backward and fell to the ground. Why?

"I am" is another way of saying Jehovah. Jesus was testifying of His identity as the Son of God to these people.

One of the few times a revelation received by someone other than Joseph Smith is included in the Doctrine and Covenants, the glorious revelation on the redemption of the dead recorded in section 138 was received by this prophet.

Joseph F Smith.

Truth is on earth once more. The church was formally established and with just 6 members, the minimum legal requirement to start a church at that time, held its first ever meeting on this date.

Finally, someone who was willing to be all in. After multiple generations of kings made halfhearted attempts to eliminate idolatry in the kingdom of Judah, this man finally went all the way in destroying all the altars and idols he could find in the kingdom. God later increased his life by 15 years at his request.

Hezekiah.

The Beatitudes.

The sections in the Doctrine and Covenants are not presented in the same order they were received. In fact, this section, the Lord's personal endorsement of the revelations in the Doctrine and Covenants, was received approximately 8 years after the first revelation.
