Definition of the Atmosphere
The layer of gas that surrounds the planet
As the years go by, what is happening to sea ice over the course of many years?
It is slowly decreasing in size every year
What were some factors that made the Global Temperature Change
Name At least 1
Bonus for 2
Amount of CO2
Amount of Sea ice/high albedo materials
Time of year (what season we are in)
The largest Carbon reservoir on Earth
The Ocean
The system (Sphere) is the Arctic Ice Apart of?
What is the Cryosphere
What is the surface Air temperature like in March and September?
Colder during March (-30 C) and hotter during September (-15 C)
What affects how much light shines on the North Pole (Arctic).
Bonus: Which gets the most light, and the least light?
The different seasons
Summer gets the most light, winter gets no light
Where is most of the carbon on earth stored?
(Hint: 2 places)
Oceans and the Lithosphere
The Biosphere is all life in a certain area.
At least 2 animals apart of the Arctic Biosphere
Polar Bears, Seals, Foxes, Walruses, Harp Seal
What month was Sea Ice the biggest? When was it the smallest?
Biggest: March, Smallest: September
Seasons: Winter biggest, Summer Smallest
Does Sea Ice have a low or high albedo?
Explain why.
High Albedo. It is white so it can reflect more light.
If there is too much Carbon Dioxide in our atmosphere, what could happen?
Our planet's temperature would increase.
It reflects the heat back to earth
How does the Ice affect Polar Bear Movement throughout the year?
As the Ice melts, The polar bears move to follow the Ice
What factors did we learn about that made the ice change in size?
Surface Temperature, Seasonal change, Global Warming air Tempurature, Albedo Affect
Describe Earth's Energy Budget
100% of Earth's Energy comes from the sun.
Some of it in Atmosphere gets reflected
Other half gets absorbed by land and oceans
Energy absorbed gets re-emitted as heat back into the atmospehre
Name at least two ways that humans do that contribute to the carbon cycle.
EX: Anything that uses fossil fuels (Electricity, Cars, etc.) Respiration, Feeding
Digging up soil releases carbon into the atmosphere
How does a change in the Atmosphere affect the Cryosphere and Biosphere in the Arctic Ice?
The atmosphere temp. increases and melts the ice over time.
This causes changes to life in the Arctic, such as the polar bear migration.
How did certain animals interact with the sea ice?
Think back to your edpuzzle video
Polar Bears use sea ice to hunt and travel on. Other species travel on it too, like walruses.
Whales don't like sea ice because they have less room to move.
Plankton/algae only grow when sea ice is not there
Explain what would happen to global temperature if there were no more sea ice.
Average Global temperature would increase because there would not be enough sea ice to reflect the energy from the sun.
What are some ways we can reduce the amount of CO2 we produce?
At least 2 ways
Save electricity (powerplants burn fuel to generate electricity)
Eat less red meat: Eventually reduces the amount of cows on the planet
Alternative Energy: solar energy
