All sound is made by vibration(the movement of an object back and forth). Sound waves are vibrations that move in all directions. 

The ear collects the vibrations, travels through the canal to the eardrum. Then moves to the three tiny bones and onto the liquid in the inner ear. The tiny hairs move the message along the optic nerve to the brain, which tells us what we heard.
