The 5 essential components of morning meeting...
What is greeting, morning message, SEL mini lesson, sharing, and teambuilding?
These are some of the RSD tools and visuals that I use in my classroom.
What is 30 second interventions, fix-it plans, y-charts, needs, voice level, classroom schedule, classroom beliefs, problem solving charts, classroom jobs, line order, classroom break spot expectations, etc.
The 4 Needs are... (bonus if you can demonstrate hand gestures that match)
What is Belonging, Success, Freedom, and Fun?
Restorative Self-Discipline is...
What is a school-wide approach to behavior (expectations, reinforcement, response)
Wayfinder is ...
What is the Tier 1 district adopted evidence-based social and emotional learning and future-ready skills program used to cultivate student belonging, resilience, and purpose.
What is a way to help students navigate academic and life challenges through lessons and activity toolkits.
Each student in your classroom needs to have a chance to share every day. True or False.
False-create a schedule for a few students to share on a certain day; create structure for this routine (what will this look like for students)
The 5 RSD introductory lessons that are to be completed by the end of September...
What is:
1. Classroom beliefs & social contract & line chart
2. My job/ Your job (ongoing tool) & classroom breaks
3. Needs (belonging, freedom, success, fun)
4. Problem solving/conflict resolution & fix-it plans
5. Ideal Self (Person I Want to Be)
Teachers can help students meet their need for freedom by...
What is giving choice, providing creative opportunities within the learning process, autonomy, time for exploration, independence, etc.
All behavior is purposeful. Our behavior is our best attempt at the time, given the resources at our disposal (knowledge, skills, etc.) to meet our needs. True or False.
What is true. This does not mean that all behavior is on purpose.
I need to teach Wayfinder at least this many times a week.
What is 1 time; use supplemental Wayfinder lessons as needed to support classroom needs during the SEL mini lesson component of morning meeting
Types of information to include in a morning message could be...
What is high frequency words, reviewing daily schedule (changes in routine), setting goals, using vocabulary, promoting engagement, etc.
Here is an example of a weave I can use with a student who is talking with the people next to them instead of doing their independent work.
What is "I would rather you get back to work. If you cannot, I will have to move you to a spot by me, but I would much rather you get back to work where you are at." Walk away. Give space for the student to make a strong choice.
Students can meet their need for fun in a helpful way by... AND Students can meet their need for fun in a hurtful way by...
What is enjoying the book they are reading, laughing with friends at lunch, learning about something they are really interested in, playing with others at recess, etc.
AND
What is cracking jokes during whole group time, giggling with their friends about unrelated school topics during partner work time, creating exclusionary games at recess, getting on Cookie Clicker instead of working on their presentation, etc.
Walking into a RSD supported classroom looks like...
What is...
classroom beliefs posted
30-second interventions posted
needs posted
fix-it sheets
your job/my job charts; is/is not charts; Y-charts
break space
voice levels posted
classroom schedule posted
above/below/bottom line poster posted
ownership (classroom jobs posted)
There is nothing I need to do after I teach a Wayfinder lesson. True or False.
What is False; click that you have completed the lesson
Teambuilding activities might be...
What is silent ball, that's me, find your match, human knot, what's in the bag, who started the motion, etc.
An Is/Is Not chart for student's morning routine could look like...
What is-
Is: signing up for lunch, putting backpack away, putting lunch box where it goes, getting started on morning work, greeting others, doing classroom job, etc.
Is not: wondering around the room, getting others off task, roaming the hallways, hanging out in the coat closet, asking the teacher what to do
What is:
Using the weave or 30 second intervention
Working through a fix-it plan with the student
Utilizing the break space in your classroom
Calling for support if needed
Co-regulation
Communicating with families
The restorative process/fixing it is...
What is a tool that helps students recognize the impact of their actions on others. Learning that all people have basic needs greatly assists in this process. Students can learn to identify how they have harmed someone else (disrupted another's needs) and identify what need was behind their own behavior (fix-it tool) to then be able to repair the harm and return to the group strengthened.
What is a process that is solution-focused, stabilizing, and restores relationships.
The 6 core Wayfinder skills I teach my students are (and the skills I hear over the announcements)...
What is self-awareness, adaptability, empathy, collaboration, agency, and purpose?
Three ways to have students greet each other are... AND The purpose of an SEL mini lesson each day is...
What is ball toss, around the world (greet others using different languages), seat-switch, compliment chain, etc.
AND
What is to build a strong classroom community, help students name and manage their emotions, set a positive, ready-to-learn tone for the school day, to address areas that students need more practice with (going over transitions, recess expectations, lunch, conflict resolution, perseverance, resiliency, belonging, etc.)
Bottom line behaviors are... AND The process I would follow to get support looks like....
What is destroying property, abusive language toward others, violence, hurting oneself or others
AND
Call Cat/front office and let her know that it is urgent; she will walkie the appropriate available staff members to support quickly
Teaching the needs is a critical step in creating a self-disciplined community in your classroom! When students understand how to identify their needs, and the needs of others, they can become internally motivated to work harder, help others, make mistakes and learn from them.
I teach and utilize the 4 Needs in the classroom/school community by...
What is conducting brief, regular discussions about our basic needs to give children many opportunities to identify how they meet their own needs.
What is using classroom token economies connected to the class meeting their needs in positive ways.
What is using the needs language regularly and consistently in and out of the classroom setting (lunchroom, recess, library, etc).
What is connecting the needs to literature to connect how characters are meeting their needs (positively or weakly).
What is having students engage in Needs activities that can be posted around the classroom/hallways for students/families/community members to reference (ideal self, person I want to be, classroom beliefs, etc.).
What is sharing with families and getting them involved.
The guiding principals of RSD include...
What is:
All behavior is purposeful.
We all have these 4 needs (belonging, success, freedom, fun).
Responsibility for our behavior comes from intrinsic motivation and community beliefs. Understanding these needs, the choices we make to meet them, the person we want to be and the classroom environment we want to have.
Conflict resolution and finding positive solutions to problems (we all make mistakes, we can fix them through a restorative process)
Students participating in SEL report...
What is:
stronger feelings of inclusion, belonging, and connection to school
greater classroom support
better relationships with teachers
increased sense of safety
better attitudes about school and others
