These are the 5 different types of conflicts in a story.
a. man vs. self ( inner conflict like a decision to make, a fear to overcome, guilt to overcome)
b. man vs. man
c. man vs. society ( one vs. a group or all of society)
d. man vs. nature ( weather, animals, landscape)
e. man vs. unknown/fate ( ie mysteries)

Theme
a. Never let yourself be defeated by injustice and don't give your oppressors the satisfaction of it
b. Always do the right thing and rise above racism, sexism or any type of persecution

e. Find positive outlets for your pain such as through artistic expression ( poetry, writing, acting, singing, teaching, etc.)

Simile
The clouds looked like pink and blue cotton candy on the sky.
This word is used to describe cancerous tumors or a negative/dangerous influence in society, oftentimes.
malignant
This is the driving conflict in The Giver, and this is the main conflict in The Giver.
Driving conflict--man vs. self ( nervousness about Ceremony of 12 and trying to overcome that)
Main conflict--man vs. society ( Jonas tries to escape the community)
These are three themes in Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou.
a. Recognize your greatness and celebrate it.
b. Others will be attracted to you and your inner beauty and motherly love you gain through hard experiences.
c. Real joy is earned through hard work on oneself.
This is the repetition of consonant sounds. This is the effect that has in the poem. This is an original example of that.
Alliteration
It emphasizes that line and add rhythm.

These are two different things compared NOT using LIKE or AS or something that cannot be taken literally.
Metaphor
The job is a dream come true.
The mountains of time, the abyss of uncertainty.
This word describe someone who is irritable or cranky....quite angry like a baby, or a bitter old man. Often, you find disatisfied customers like this.
Peevish
This is the turning point in the story, the point at which we now mostly know what will happen, as the story turns or changes direction.
a. He decides to take Gabriel and escape the community.
This is who was spurned and this is who was honored in Still I Rise by M. Angelou.
Spurned---the white supremacists that persecuted her and her people
Honored--the slaves or her ancestors who gave their all yet were not allowed to achieve, so she does it for them.
This is the repetition of vowel sounds in a line of poetry. This is the effect it has in the poem. This is an original example of it.
Assonance
It emphasizes that line's ideas and adds rhythm
I am the fair in share, a spare pair of prayers
This is giving an object human qualities. This is an original example of it.
Personification
The warm and breezy moonlit night invited us to come out.
The menacing clouds were threatening us with a torrential downpour.
This means you are so embarrassed you could almost die like a ballerina falling on stage, or dropping your lunch tray in the cafeteria or giving a dumb answer while you're the new kid in class.
mortified ( mortify is the verb form...what could possibly mortify you.....speaking in front of a large crowd?)
This is a symbolic hint at later events in the story. This is an example of this in The Giver.
Foreshadowing
Jonas' first memory of a thrilling sleigh ride foreshadows the ending of the story as he descends the mountain and enters the village also on a sleigh
The pale and deep eyes Gabe and Jonas had foreshadow their ability to receive memories

a. You need to step into different people's shoes to understand all sides of a problem before you can start addressing it.
b. Use your talents to change the world, as much positive change is definitely needed. He used his prodigious writing talent
c. Believe in yourself because you can be a game changer too if you care enough about humanity.

This is the highest point of excitement in some event or story.
Culminate
The party culminated with a display of fireworks.
The story culminated with the loving couple marrying.
This is the opposite of what you expect to happen in a story. These are two examples of this in The Giver.
Irony
a. The Assignment Jonas received is held in high regard and considered the most prestigious in the community and this is ironic because in reality it is the most disturbing and agonizing one, a most unexpected truth.
b. It is ironic that Jonas' father who seemed to be such a caring Nurturer is the same person who "releases" or kills babies when he needs to.
This is the theme in Text by Carol Ann Duffy.
a. Texting is not the optimal way to communicate as it's mechanical and devoid off emotion, animation, life.
b. Texting is addictive as we try to overcome its shortcomings, yet never could as nothing replaces human presence when communicating.
c. People are starved for affection, closeness and connection with others. Technology will drive us further away from this if we let it.
This is the end word in each line that adds a pattern to the poem giving it a musical quality. This is the beat within each line of the poem, also giving it a musical quality. These are two examples of the end line pattern throughout the poem.
