Grew up in Holland and first learned about art from his uncles who were artists and dealers. Wanted to be a minister when he was young (like his father) and help people who were poor, but later moved to Paris to be a better painter.  At the time of his death, he only sold one of 1700 painting he created, but some of his paintings are the most valued in the world now. The truth behind his ear is still unknown.
