Fractions, decimals and percents are all _________.

100

Regular interest - not compounded

A=prt

The Amount you get is the Principal times the interest Rate

...because beans cause flatulence.

Why were the Pythagoreans forbidden from eating beans?

Is the answer to this going to be neg or pos?

(x/-y)*-z

WHt does absolute value of any number measure?

200

Name 5 benchmark fraction/decimal percents.

1/2 - .5 - 50%

1/4 - .25 - 25%

1/5 - .2 - 20%

1/8 - .125 - 12.5%

1/10 - .1 - 10%

200

Compound interest

When the principal plus the interest earned in reinvested over and over.

Why did the Pythagoreans drown Hippasus?

Give an example of using benchmark percents to calcuate the 15% tip on a 70.00 dinner bill.

10% is 7.00 (1/10 of 70)

5% is 3.50 (half of the10%)

10.50 is the tip.

Explain this graph. Include what we see here and the math behind it. Include why this is important for specifically young people.

This graph shows exponential growth. To generate this data you need to use an exponent. This is important for young people because the even an extra few years of investments makes for much bigger returns for retirement.

Because you cannot measure a shape (or any distance) with a negative number.

Why didn't the Pythagoreans want to know about negative numbers?

What is a mixed number? How do you turn it into an improper fraction?

A mixed number is a value with a whole number and a fraction together - 1 and 2/3

To make an improper fraction, multiply 3x1 and add 2 - you get 5

Put 5 in the numerator and the originak 3 in the denominator to get 5/3

This table shows the Canadian male population - ages 15-29 from 1942-1945. If the total population of Canadian males 15-19 years old was 1,585,000 in 1942, what percent of Canadian males between the ages 15 and 29 presumably died during WW2? Name the steps involved in solving this problem using equivalent ratios.

1. Set up equal ratios - Put  2,428,000 (total population in 1942) in the denominator of one ratio and 100 in the denominator of the other ratio.

2. Now find the number presumably dead as a result of WWII.  Find the difference between the population in 1942 and 1945 and put that number over the total population.

3. Solve the ratio to find the %. Use cross multiply method  or find the factor method.
