In theory monopolies are against the law because they aren't good for competition. Which goes against American principal. They lower their prices with the intent to drive the competition out of business. Once competition has failed they buy up the competitor and hike back their prices. These are unfair business practices. Laissze Faire contributed to the growth of monopolies.
