What is otitis externa?
Removal of stapes of middle ear & insertion of graft & prosthesis. Txt: bedrest, position flat, don't turn patient, assess for HA and dizziness, and patient education.
What is stapedectomy?
Systemic penicillin antibiotic used in acute otitis media. It can be taken on a full or empty. Don't give if allergric to penicillin or cephalosporin. Side effects: anaphylaxis, rash, & diarrhea.
What is amoxicillin?
This anticholingeric antihistamine is used to treat vertigo. Give with food or milk. May cause blurred vision, drowsiness, SOB, painful urination, inhibition of lactation or disorientation.
What is dimenhydrinate or Dramamine?
May be caused by viral/bacteria infection, allergy, exposure to smoke. Common in children. Pus collects in middle ear. Treated with ABX, pain meds, decongestants, myringotomy, & tympanostomy.
What is otitis media?
Characterized by chronic progressive deafness caused by the formation of spongy bone causing ankylosis (stiffening, immobility) of stapes. S/S: slow progressive conductive hearing loss, low to medium pitched tinnitis, deafness noted at age 11-20. Treated with sodium fluoride with vitamin D and calcium, stapedectomy, & hearing aid.
What is otosclerosis?
This medication is used to remove cerumen. Don't use if eardrum is perforated or if there is ear discharge. Reevaluate if edema, erythema, or pain persists. Dermatitis may be a side effect. Not recommended for children.
What is carbamide peroxide or Debrox?
This antibacterial, antifungal, astringent is used for superficial infections of external auditory canal. Remember to not wash the dropper and use cotton plug. May cause contact dermatitis.
What is acetic acid?
Inflammation of the labyrinthine canals caused by viral upper respiratory infection. Tobacco & alcohol may have causative factors. S/S: severe & sudden vertigo, N/V, nystagmus, photopobia, HA, & ataxia gait. Diagnosed with electronystagmography and audimetric testing. Treated with ABX, dimenhydrinate or meclizine HCL.
What is labyrinthitis?
May follow head trauma or otitis media. Recurrent episodes of vertigo, progressive unilateral nerve deafness, tinnitis. Common in women 30-60. Txt: fluid restriction, diuretics, low salt diet, meds to reduce vertigo, avoid caffeine & nicotine.
What is Meniere's Disease?
This antibiotic/steroid/detergent used for susceptible ear disease. Don't heat bottle above body temperature or use if eardrum is perforated. May cause ototoxicity, contact dermatitis, pruritis, rash, or erythema, and edema.
What is colistin or Coly-Mycin?

Caused by impaction or excessive secretion of cerumen or foreign bodies. S/S: ear feels plugged up, tinnitis, ear pain, slight hearing loss. Treatment includes: removal of cerumen/foreign objects, medication, or surgical removal
What is obstruction of ear?

This is an antiemetic, antivertigo agent used to treat disease affecting vestibular system. Give with food, water, or milk. Avoid alcohol and CNS depressants. May cause drowsiness, blurred vision, & dry mouth.
What is meclizine hydrochloride or Antivert?
This analgesic, local anesthetic used for otitis media and adjunct to cerumen removal. Nursing implications:
-date bottle and discard after 6 months from first use
-don't use -if eardrums are perforated
-warm bottle
-Have patient on side & fill ear canal
