What animal carries Yersinia Pestis (the plague)?

Fleas become infected by feeding on infected animals such as chipmunks, prairie dogs, rabbits, squirrels, mice and woodrats infected with the bacteria. The infected fleas then transmit the plague bacteria to humans and other mammals during the blood feeding process. Carnivores typically get plague from ingesting infected animals or from flea bites. Other exposures may include contact with contaminated soil, and inhalation of aerosolized Y. pestis in respiratory droplets from infected animals.

At what age are cats tested for FeLV/FIV?

There is no age requirement for testing a kitten for FeLV. Positive test results should either be followed up with the Western Blot Test (for FIV) or another snap test in 1-2 months. If still positive at 6 months, can consider the pet to be persistently infected.
