This file includes:

  • Patient history including the patient signalment

  • Complete physical examination findings

  • Results of a preanesthetic diagnostic workup

What is the Minimum Patient Database or MPD

200

True or false: Pediatric patients should be fasted

What is false

200
List at least 2 benefits of using inhalant anesthesia

what is:

  • Minimal hepatic metabolism

  • Minimal renal excretion

  • Little retention in body fat

  • Well tolerated in animals with hepatic and renal disease, neonatal and geriatric animals

200

A term for a profound state of sedation and analgesia induced by simultaneous administration of an opioid and a sedative

What is neuroleptanalgesia

200

True or False: NSAIDs and steroids can be administered concurrently?

What is false

300

Name Classification of Patient Anesthetic Risk: LOW PATIENT WITH MILD SYSTEMIC DISEASE

PS2 or Physical Status 2

300

Describe 2 ways to measure for an ET tube

What is

- measure the space between the nares

- divide the patient's weight in kg by 4 then add 4

- use the ASPCA chart

300

This term is the lowest concentration of an anesthetic agent at which 50% of patients show no response to a painful stimulus

What is the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC)

300

This drug can cause the following effects:

  • Cats with repeat doses

    • Heinz body formation on red blood cells (RBCs)

    • Diarrhea, anorexia, prolonged recoveries

  • Sighthounds - prolonged recovery

    • Also other breeds

    • If maintained on propofol > 30 minutes

What is Propofol

300

Name 2 local anesthetic agents

What are:

- lidocaine

- bupivacaine

- mepivacaine

- procaine

400

List the TPR values of canines

What is

T: 37.8-39.2 degrees C

P: 60-180bpm

R: 10-30brpm

400

What is the correct order of oxygen flow in a rebreathing circuit from the source, towards your patient, when not using the oxygen flush valve.

What is

- oxygen tank

- flow meter

- vaporizer

- common gas outlet

- breathing circuit

- patient

400

What is the MAC factor and vaporizer setting for a healthy patient for surgical anesthesia?

    • 1 x MAC = light stage III anesthesia

    • 1.5 x MAC = surgical anesthesia

What is 1.5 x MAC = surgical anesthesia

ex)  1.3 x 1.5 = 1.95 → turn setting to 2%

400

This injectable anesthetic drug has:

  • Short duration of action

  • Wide margin of safety

  • Use for IV for induction anesthesia and maintenance

  • Use IM in cats for deep sedation/light anesthesia

  • Used for small exotics

What is alfaxalone

400

What opioid would you choose to treat mild to moderate pain?

What is butorphanol or buprenorphine (tramadol??)
500
What is the oxygen flow rate in a non-rebreathing system?

What is 200-300 mL/kg/min

500

An obese feline patient weighing 13 kg, with a BCS of 9/9, needs some light sedation with
butorphanol (10 mg/ml) for radiographs. If my dose for this patient is 0.4 mg/kg of butorphanol,
calculate the amount needed for sedation.

What is 0.37 mL of torb

500

Name 1 preanesthetic from each class:

Benzodiazepines

Anticholinergics

Alpha-2-Agonists

Opioids: Agonists

Bentley is a 3 year old male Beagle cross coming in for an orchiectomy. His BCS is 6/9, and his current
weight is 12 kg. Calculate his ideal body weight, and amount of dexmedetomidine needed as part of his
premedication. The concentration of dexmedetomidine is 0.5 mg/ml. The dose we will use for him is 4 micrograms/kg

IDW: 10.9 kg
Amount of dexmedetomidine: 0.09 ml

500

A 35 kg, 5 year old MN GSD needs dental surgery to remove all 4 fractured canine teeth.
a) What is the maximum amount of bupivacaine 0.5% that he can have using a drug dose of 2
mg/kg?
b) Approximately how much bupivacaine can be injected at each dental nerve block site?
c) If he has 4 fractured canines and needs injections at 4 quadrants, am I exceeding the
maximum dose recommended?

a) first calculate maximum patient drug dose of bupivacaine = 35 kg x 2 mg/kg = 70 mg
a. Maximum amount = patient drug dose/drug concentration
= 70 mg/5 (mg/ml)
= 14 ml
b) you can inject 0.1 ml/site/10 lbs. Our patient is 35 kg OR (35x 2.2 = 77 lbs), therefore you can
inject 0.77 or 0.8 ml per site – calculated ->(77 lbs/10 lbs) x 0.1 ml
c) If you are injecting at 4 sites, you will need to use (0.8 ml x 4) 3.2 ml of bupivacaine, which is
a very safe amount (because 14 ml is the maximum you can use). Therefore, you are NOT
exceeding the maximum recommended amount for your patient
