  1. Identify and monitor the value of patient-centered care in order to achieve optimal patient outcomes and safety 

  1. Monitor and analyze the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI), internal audits, regulatory requirements, and other quality measure data and corresponding benchmarks 

  1. Coordinate process improvement activities across patient care units for gaps in compliance of quality measure data 

  1. Report on quality outcomes, action plans, and progress towards patient-centered quality goals

Once nursing became recognized as a profession, in the 1980s hospital administration stopped creating policies for nursing and began to create structures for nurses to create their own policies. The forums which nurses come together to discuss their practice is known as this.

A unit-based workgroup that empowers nurses to have a voice in matters involving their professional practice and day-to-day operations on the unit. They are the foundation of the shared governance model. They receive input from all staff at the unit level, carry out data-driven, value-added professional practice improvement projects, and share their progress with their unit and the organization.

The purpose of this organization-wide council is to:

1. Provide a forum for communicating suggestions for changes in existing informational systems or edit to existing documentation in electronic medical record 

  1. Review and approve interprofessional IT documentation to ensure a streamlined electronic medical record that reflects evidence-based practice, regulatory standards, and federal and state law and improves patient safety, communication, and workflows 

  1. Ensure that approved documentation expectations for each role are appropriate for the healthcare professional’s scope of practice 

  1. Evaluate current documentation processes, identify gaps, and opportunities for system optimization across the continuum of care

  1. Promote nursing research visibility and dissemination within the institution as well as regionally and nationally
