What is the 1st thing to do when shelving?
Place books on the shelving carts.
How is PBK shelved?
Alphabetically by author.
What direction do books go on the shelves?
Left to right (same way that we read and write. day and night. dense or light. think I might be done for the night--)
Where is the first place you should check for a lost book?
Its appropriate place on the shelf.
Where are the two places you can look up a book?
The Library Website and Horizon.
Which cart do you shelve first?
The one with the most books.
If a book has two authors (ex. Holly Black & Cassandra Clare), how do you shelve it?
By the first listed author (In this case, Holly Black).
How are feature films shelved?
Alphabetically by title.
Where can you typically find a misshelved book?
Places with similar call numbers.
What important button restricts your search to only books (or excludes databases in searches)?
The "Catalog" Button.
What are most books shelved by?
The Library of Congress system.
If two books have authors with the same last name (ex. Twilight by Stephanie Meyer and Gilded by Marissa Meyer), which do you shelve first?
After last name, first name (in this case, Gilded by Marissa Meyer).
Is all of JUV PZ?
No. It goes all the way from A-Z and has its own oversized section.
What places do people overlook when checking for lost books?
ILL, the shelving area, and reserves.
What is the Horizon shortcut for looking up a book?
F2.
What do you do if you can't finish all the shelving before the end of the rotation?
Tell your lead and go to your next assignment.
What words do you ignore in titles while shelving?
"A," "An," and "The" (ex. The Way of Kings shelved after Warbreaker).
Where are the religion books located?
In the "B" section.
A patron wants a book you can't find. What information do we need from them to update them about it?
Name, I-Number, and student email.
How do you tell where a book is located on the library website (ex. general, juv, pbk, etc.)?
Click on the book and then scroll to where the call number is. There's a column there called "location."
What part of shelving is skipped the most?
Shelving books on carts by the call number.
Where do you shelve a book with a number in the title (ex. 2001: A Space Odyssey)?
Numbers in titles are shelved first.
What is the letter in the Library of Congress call number called (ex. the "E" in "E11 .M5 2002")?
The Subject Heading.
Who checks in lost books?
The lead.
What can you recommend to a patron if we don't have a book in our collection?
ILL to loan from another library, or Request Purchase to buy the book for our collection.
