What needs to be done if wrong medication is given to a youth?
Immediately contact pharmacy, doctor, or nearest emergency department for advice. Report to on-call coordinator. Fill our CIR and update social worker.
What do you do if a medication is dropped or contaminated?
Label and place in an envelope for disposal. Provide the furthest ahead dated medication to be given out. Document what happened and create a CIR.

What do you do if a youth's medication requires injection?
The youth must be able to administer the medication themselves. Staff are to witness youth cleaning the area of injection with an alcohol swab, watch the youth inject the medication, and provide a safe place to dispose of the needle (sharps container).
Is there a time when a youth is able to keep their medication in their bedroom?
If there has been previous discussion with the social worker who would like the youth to have the responsibility to keep their own medication. This needs to be approved the program manager and the social worker needs to have this in writing.
Can youth be given melatonin if not prescribed by a doctor? If yes, why. If no, why not?
Only if this is a conversation had with the social worker. The social worker needs to write this medication specifically on the medication form at intake. If missed, the social worker will need to send an email providing permission that the youth can take melatonin and provide what the dosage is.
The reason is because melatonin can be used as a restraint.
Can a youth pick up their own medication from the pharmacy?
No. Staff are to pick youth's medication up for them.
In instances where the social worker would like the youth to have more responsibility and there is prior approval, then they can.
Or if a youth needs to be at the pharmacy themselves to take a medication while at the pharmacy (ex. suboxone).
