Why is substance use a serious risk factor for suicide?

Alcohol can exacerbate person’s depressive symptoms. Substances can increase the chance someone with suicidal thoughts will act on them by increasing disinhibition and impulsivity. Substance use can also lead to an increase in aggression and negative affectivity, decrease use of healthy coping strategies, and negatively impact decision-making abilities.
