Julie and Terry were talking about stuff while sitting around the campfire. They were marveling about all the different types of stuff that exists. Julie told Terry that stuff is called matter and that all matter is made of atoms. She also said that there are only about 100 different types of atoms. Terry said, “That's impossible! How can all the different types of stuff out there be made of just 100 different elements?” Julie said, “On Monday, let’s talk to our teacher about this.”In the meantime, they decided to make some hot chocolate on the campfire. They heated some water in a pan. Think about the changes in matter and energy that occur while Julie is heating the water to 70ᵒC for making hot chocolate.

What happens to the particles as they are heated to 70 C

Particles will speed up and move apart from one another.
