This is a tool or object that allows us to complete tasks faster and more easily.

Simple machines
100

This simple machine is a slanted surface or a ramp that helps us to move things or people from a low place to a high place or from a high place to a low place.

An inclined plane

100
This simple machine has two parts to it.  There is a rod in the middle of it that attaches the two sides together.
A wheel and axle
100
We did this experiment with this simple machine and pieces of Styrofoam to see how many turns it would take to go into it.
The screw experiment
100
For this experiment we were able to choose an object to lift up and down using this simple machine.
The pulley experiment
200
What are the six types of simple machines?
The six types are an inclined plane, lever, wedge, wheel and axle, screw and pulley
200

This simple machine is made up of two inclined planes that are put together.  It is used to push two objects apart or to cut an object into pieces.

A wedge
200

This simple machine has a rope or chain attached that is used to move objects up or down. When you pull down on the rope on the side, the wheel turns and the load moves up. When you pull up on the rope on the side, the wheel turns and the load moves down.

A pulley
200
We did this experiment with the marshmallows and toothpicks to roll it around.
The wheel and axle experiment
300
Finish the line from the song... "Simple Machines..."
Make work easier to do...
300
What are two examples of a screw?

Jar lids, toothpaste lids, light bulbs and bottle caps

300
What are two examples of pulleys?

Window blinds, flagpoles, sails on ships, a well

300
We used bags of rice and lifted them with an elastic band on a tall stack to see how much the elastic would stretch.
The inclined plane experiment
400

This simple machine is a bar that rests on a point called a fulcrum.  The bar moves but the fulcrum does not.  It is used for lifting things and helps us to do work.

A lever
400

What are two examples of an inclined plane?

Stairs, escalators, ladders, slide, wheelchair ramps

400
What are two examples of the wheel and axle?

A merry-go-round, car wheels, bicycle wheels, skateboard wheels, wagon or a ferris wheel

400
We did this experiment using our classroom door to see if A, B or C would be more difficult or easy to push the door open using one finger.
The lever experiment
500

This simple machine has a nail with an inclined plane wrapped around it.  It is used to hold things together and hold objects down.

A screw
500
What are two examples of a lever?

Wheelbarrows, baseball bats, a door handle, light switches, scissors, tweezers, a stapler, a broom, a tennis racket or a seesaw

500
What are two examples of a wedge?
A doorstop, scissors, fork, knife, saw, shovel or an axe
500
We did this experiment using paper airplanes, one with a pointed nose and one without to see which one would fly the farthest.
