Phosphorus was actually the first element ever discovered that wasn't known since ancient times, and its discovery came about in the weirdest way possible—through alchemy and urine.
Hennig Brand, a German alchemist, was trying to create the Philosopher's Stone (you know, that mythical substance that could turn metals into gold). He collected gallons of urine—yes, human pee—and boiled it down, hoping to extract gold. Instead, he ended up with a white, waxy substance that glowed in the dark and spontaneously caught fire in air. That substance was white phosphorus.
So basically, phosphorus lit the way (literally) into the era of modern chemistry—all because of a failed gold-making experiment and a whole lot of pee.
