Whitney invented the cotton gin which removed seeds from cotton, making its processing quicker. More slaves could pick more cotton to be processed faster than before.

From the Roman/Latin word for it. Romans like to get slaves from Eastern Europe (east of the Danube River). Ever since we have called those people "slavic."

He was a runaway slave who lived free for years in the north. His "owner" sued to get him back. SCOTUS ruled that he be returned because he was property.

Reparations are payments paid for damage done to someone or a group. For: Slaves helped build America's economy and were treated terribly. Against: No slave is still alive. America paid 650,000 lives in the Civil War to free the slaves.

Turner had visions that he was supposed to lead the slaves in rebellion. He identified with Moses. In history, Austin led people to Texas & Brigham Young led Mormons to Utah.

Professor Shelby Foote says the war was caused by America’s inability to compromise and that “our whole country was founded upon compromise.” Explain what he means using the Constitution.
Laws can't be passed unless Congress & the President agree. Judges & cabinet members can't be confirmed unless the Congress & Prez agree. There would have been no US unless they agreed to count slaves as 3/5 of a person.

Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri. They were border states with the North and understood that if they tried to secede, the would be quickly and easily be invaded.
