What is a period and what is a group in the periodic table?

A group is a column of elements that carry similar properties, and a period is a row of elements with the same number of valence electrons.

What is a celestial object, give three different types of examples.

A celestial object is any object that exists in space, for example, the Sun, Earth, or a meteoroid. (Examples may vary, however, they must not be the same type of object to receive the points ie. they cannot be Earth, Jupiter, and Mars as they are all planets)

Scientists have discovered only 2 million species, but according to their research, they estimate that there are 5-100 million species. Give 3 reasons why.

Answers may vary

1- Lack of resources

2- Extinction

3- Pollution

How did mercury affect the lives of aboriginal people in northern Ontario?

Since mercury is a toxic metal found in the bodies of water in northern Ontario, all the fish in the waterways have been negatively impacted resulting in the whole food chain getting corrupted, and the aboriginal people (that traditionally eat fish) are also being negatively impacted by the mercury found in the waterways.

Why are white dwarfs hot and dim?

Because, although they are closer to the left-hand side of the Hertsprung-Russel Diagram (they are bluer) they are much smaller, so they can't emit as much light as other stars like red giants. It's just like saying a lightbulb is less bright than a laser beam.

Suppose you have a job assembling electronic components at a factory. The parts arrive on your metal table after being slid down a plastic tube. the components end up not working properly and your boss thinks it's your fault, explain why it may not be your fault.

To fully understand what the problem is, we need to analyze the process the components go through. They are slid down a plastic tube resulting in a negative charge on the metal components (charged by friction.) Then when they reach the metal table, the electrons can now move freely from the component. They then move along the table and got to the ground, where the charge of the component is now neutral. However, since the electrons were able to move around some components in a way where the resistors were unable to handle the overflow of electrons, those components no longer work.

Provide a convincing argument as to why Governments should provide funding for scientists to record information on biodiversity.

Answers may vary

Biodiversity is one of the more important researches since it can prevent extinction due to the fact that it helps us understand that there is a lack of popularity of a certain species and it is approaching extinction, knowing this makes it a lot easier for us to prevent its extinction.

Why is the concentration of DDT higher in polar bears than arctic cod? What chemical property of DDT allows this to happen?

Because of bioaccumulation and biomagnification. DDT is a toxic substance that is highly soluble in fat and collected in fat deposits in the animal. Because of this, DDT can bioaccumulate and biomagnify extremely easily.

What are the pros and cons of space exploration? (Give 3 of each)

Pros: expanding our knowledge of the solar system, theories created to help solve everyday problems, and helps us recognize the beautiful creations of Allah (SWT.)

Cons: expensive, risky, and often isn't that reliable since we can only explore so much.

Give three pros and three cons of electric vehicles.

Pros: reduce fossil fuel use, can be easily recharged, and have a longer lifespan

Cons: expensive to produce, not perfect, (still need to use fossil fuels to get charged) and time consumption from charging.

Answers may vary.

Why is Canada's ecological footprint larger than the global avg footprint (per person?)

Answers may vary

Large landmasses, resulting in urban sprawl, increasing the amount of fossil fuel usage (due to transportation.)

Which type of model will be best to use to determine if a new pain killer is the correct size and shape to bind to a particular location on a nerve cell? explain

Computer-generated models. Computer-generated models are particularly used when making medication and studying DNA as they can show you an accurate representation of the size and shape of the atoms helping with the calculations, they also have a zero percent chance of making a human error, unlike any other models.

A camera on Mars rover detects a hole 100 m ahead, it takes 20 minutes for signals to reach to earth. If a technician sends a stop command, will the rover stop in time if it travels 1 m/min?

We know that if the rover is travelling 100m/20min it will just barely stop in time. So, to see if 1m/m is slow enough for it to stop before falling in the hole, we need to simplify 100m/20min which is 5 m/min. since 1 m/min is slower than 5 m/min, the rover will be able to stop in time.

How would you ensure that the speakers in your living room work to the best of your ability if you are connecting it to an ac source in your room?

First and foremost, make sure all the speakers get an equal voltage, use a parallel circuit, minimize the resistance by using short and thick wires since they are the least resistant, therefore, try to be the most efficient when it comes to the distance covered. Also, make sure to use the most conductive wire (since superconductors are hard to come by due the temperature needed, use normal wires that are good conductors.) Finally, make sure there is a non-conductive material surrounding the wire so that the electrons cannot be transferred to the ground to neutralize the charge.
