In steer wrestling, a cowboy jumps from his horse onto the back of a running steer. He grabs the steer by the horns and wrestles it to the ground. There is even a team roping event. Rodeos feature contests that are related to cowboys of the past. In the late 1800s, most of the land on the plains out west did not have fences. Ranchers hired cowboys to round up the cattle from these open lands and brand them. (To brand a cow means to put a mark on it to show who owns it.) The cowboys had to move the cattle from pasture to pasture so they could graze and find water. They also had to move, or drive, the cattle long distances to towns where they were bought, sold, or butchered. Cowboys and cowgirls in today’s rodeos use the same skills used by the cowboys of the Old West.

Main Idea: People who compete in today’s rodeos use skills that cowboys of the past used.
