Theory
According to this theory, all societies are characterized by inequality, conflict, and change as groups within the society struggle over scarce resources.
What is conflict theory?
A group of people who are believed to share a common ancestry based on perceived physical similarities.
What is race?
A monogamous (two-parent) couple living with their children and no extended family members.
The level of acceptance that members of one group have toward members of another.
What is social distance?
This organization gathers data on the US population. It began allowing people to select multiple racial categories starting in the year 2000.
What is the US Census Bureau?
This theory claims that an intimate group such as a family must be analyzed as a whole, and that it has boundaries that distinguish it from other groups. The people in the family form a system and have roles that apply to that system.
What is systems theory?
A group of people with a common cultural identification, based on a combination of language, religion, ancestral origin, or traditional practices.
What is ethnicity?
A system of gender roles that developed in the 1820s, among middle- and upper-class families, wherein men were expected to work outside the home and women were expected to stay home and take care of the children.
What is separate spheres?
The mate selection process in which couples begin a relationship with supervised contact in public, the proceed to dates in the woman's home and then to marriage if the parents approve.
What is courtship?
A family system in which each person only has one spouse.
What is monogamy?
According to this theory, costs and rewards are the best way to understand intimate relationships like marriage and family.
What is exchange theory?
A racial or ethnic group that occupies a subordinate statues in society. Usually this is a group that is smaller than the dominant group.
What is a minority?
The period of high birth rates in the United States between 1946 and 1964.
What is the baby boom?
Management and rule by hierarchical authority among many offices and by fixed procedures.
What is bureaucracy?
Official and overt segregation impacted this group by preventing them from buying homes in white neighborhoods. Although official discrimination has ended, systemic and unofficial racism continues, as well as the legacy of past discrimination.

An ideal family characterized by the mutual affection, equality, and friendship/romance of its members, rather than by economic or survival concerns.

A personal outlook that puts family obligations first, before individual well-being.
What is familism?
Matrilineal descent (tracing a family lineage and family name through the mother) was a common characteristic that distinguished this group from Europeans.
Who are Native Americans?
This concept attempts to quantify the access to resources a person has because of relationships and connections within a social network.
What is social capital?
Marriage or reproduction within a distinct group.
What is endogamy?
A legal doctrine under which wives were incorporated into their husband's citizenship. Their husband was their agent in society, meaning they could not vote or own property for themselves.
What is coverture?
The acquisition of a new language and culture.
What is acculturation?
This technique, used by insurers, banks, and even government organizations, classified majority black neighborhoods as high risk for loans and loan insurance, effectively keeping many people from being able to afford their own homes based on race.
