Describe the role of the Shogun during the Edo period, how was this different to the role of the Emperor?

The Emperor was the holy individual in charge of Japan, and was believed to be chosen by the Gods. However, he was more of a figure head as the Shogun made all the decisions about laws, military, trade, and economic expansion.

Both believed it was their destiny to build a mighty empire and conquer those around them through forced and violence. They were both deeply religious and used their beliefs to drive this violence.

Describe the exclusion laws. Why were these put into place?

Exclusion laws were put into place by the Shogun in the early 1600's. They were intended to isolated Japan even further from all foreign influences in order to remove any threats to the Shoguns control. These laws did not allow people outside of Japan to access Japan, and vise versa.

A hierarchal system that is centered around labor and farming. The monarch is at the top, followed by nobles and peasants (who upkeep the land).

Describe the life of a serf

Serfs were peasants who worked under the control of their lord. They were "owned" by their lord, and would have to maintain the land/farms on a manor. They had to live in small huts on the manor, and were not allowed to leave this property.

Describe the peasant revolts that took place after the Black Death

Following the Black Death, commoners were frustrated at the monarch and elite. Many began to speak out against the hierarchal system and began to riot on the streets and refuse to pay taxes.

A system that gave all the land to the Spanish and forced the Aztecs to work as slaves. Those who lived on the land grew rich from selling the crops that the Aztecs farmed.
