1.) Idea Stage : A bill starts as an idea, often initiated by a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), the government, or concerned citizens.
2.) First Reading : The bill is introduced in the Alberta Legislature. It’s called the “First Reading”. The bill’s title and general idea are presented
3.) Second Reading : The bill is debated by all the MLA’s. They discuss the bill’s principles, not its details. A vote is held, and if the majority agrees, the bill proceeds.
4.) Committee Stage : The bill is examined by a legislative committee. They study it in detail, make amendments, and gather public input
5.) Report Stage : The committee reports its findings and any changes to the bill back to the Legislature
6.) Third Reading : The final version of the bill is debated and voted upon. If it passess, it moves to the other house (if applicable)
