Social Smarts
Smarts that we use in our brains for school learning. Things like math smarts, computer smarts, and science smarts.
What is SCHOOL SMARTS
These are the tools we use to be a good social detective.
What are EYES, EARS, BRAINS and HEART.
This would be an example of an expected behavior at school.
What is (COULD BE RAISING HAND, PARTICIPATING IN GROUP, EYES ON TEACHER, LISTENING, etc.)
You walk into the classroom and the lesson has already started. These tools help to figure out what to do?
What are EYES to see what others are doing, EARS to hear any directions, BRAIN to think of what we usually do at this time.
We use these smarts when we're around other people.
What is SOCIAL SMARTS
This would be an example of poor eye contact while someone's trying to talk to you.
What is (DEMONSTRATE POOR EYE CONTACT - NOT LOOKING AT PERSON, LOOKING AROUND ROOM OR DOWN, LOOKING AT A PHONE OR iPAD.)
I was distracted and did not hear the page number for math. I use these to figure it out in this way.
What are EYES to see what page the person next to you is on, EARS to hear if the teacher says it again.
This is keeping your body close but not too close to others while you work or play together. It is called ______ in the ______. It is an expected behavior.
What is BODY IN THE GROUP
When we use all of our tools (eyes, ears, brain, and heart) to figure things out, we can make this type of guess.
What is SMART GUESS
These are examples of things you could say to the other team if your team wins and theirs doesn't.
What is (GOOD GAME, BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME, YOU WIN SOME, YOU LOSE SOME)
I want to ask my Mom a question but she is talking to another adult. I use these tools in this way to know when it is okay to ask.
What is EARS to listen for a break in the conversation, EYES to notice if Mom is turning away or starting to leave the group, BRAIN to remember to wait and not to interrupt.
We use social smarts to figure out how to do this based on where we are and what we are expected to do at that time.
What is FOLLOWING THE GROUP PLAN, HAVING EXPECTED BEHAVIOR, or BEHAVING
When we do what is expected, people have these about us.
What are COMFORTABLE (GOOD) THOUGHTS.
People use their eyes, ears, heart and brain to figure this out about other people.
What they are FEELING and/or THINKING and/or PLANNING TO DO NEXT.
This is an example of an uncomfortable thought a teacher might have if a student is doing an unexpected behavior like not listening or participating.
What is (THIS IS FRUSTRATING, WHY AREN'T THEY FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS OR LISTENING?, etc.)
Dad and I are going outside to work on a project. My Dad is putting on a jacket. I can use these tool to predict what Dad is thinking and why he put on his jacket.
What are EYES to see Dad putting on a jacket, BRAIN to think about when/why we wear a jacket.
One part of social smarts is knowing that kids think about this.
What is THINKING ABOUT HOW OTHER KIDS BEHAVE
Thinking, "It's hard to work with Sam." "I don't like it when Maria is so loud." "Why won't Joe listen to me?" are all examples of this kind of thoughts.
What is UNCOMFORTABLE THOUGHTS
A boy telling a new student that she has been held back because she is taller than everyone else is an example of this kind of guess.
What is a WACKY GUESS
These are examples of things we can look and listen for to figure out if someone is safe and nice to play with.
What is (HOW THEY MAKE YOU FEEL, WHAT YOU HEAR THEM SAY, WHAT YOU SEE THEM DO, etc.)
I see my friend walk to the equipment cart at recess. I can use these tools in this way to predict what my friend is going to do.
What are EYES to see which item my friend will pick, BRAIN to connect that piece of equipment (basketball, hula hoop, playground ball) with an activity.
