Possible response:  "I see you cut your hair.  I really liked it the way you had it. "

Who is more likely to be diagnosed with ASD?  Boys or girls?

Boys

Tell me a good choice to make when you are feeling upset about something in your routine changing that was unexpected.

Example:

You were planning on having a ham sandwich for lunch but you got a peanut butter and jelly (which you really don't like).

It's ok!  This stuff can happen all the time.  Remember to take a deep breath, stay flexible, and ask an adult to help find something else you would like to eat for lunch.  Stay calm, and work through it!

Name 3 people in this class that enjoy playing chess.  Who do you think is the best at it?

A child...

A peer (same age boy)...

Teacher.....

In a library...

At a sporting event....

A child... talk patiently, slowly, and clearly

A peer (same age boy)... you can let lose and talk about likes and dislikes.  Slang is ok, jokes are ok.

Teacher.....speak politely, and a sign of respect.

In a library... speak quietly

At a sporting event....speak loudly to be heard

200

Tell me the three factors that individuals with ASD often struggle with.

Communication, behavior, socialization

200

Tell me two ways you can make/ interact with friends when you are  in school.

Talking/playing friends out at recess.

Asking to play chess or free time item at the end of the day.

Asking to meet up online to play one of the games on our class gaming list.

200

Tell me which of your classmates you feel that you have the most in common with and enjoy their company.

Individual responses accepted.

200

Tell me the difference between your break choices, and your earned "free time" choices.

Break choices are the things you can do after you are finished with your work, and free time is only given at the end of the day if you earn all of your 10 points.

Explain what audience awareness is.

Audience awareness is knowing that when you are around different people, you need to act differently in order to avoid getting yourself in a situation where you could get yourself into trouble.  For example:  Talking to your friends about what you do and don't like about a crush is ok because you are talking it out.  However, if that person was to walk by or hear you, it might hurt their feelings.

300

Explain what it means to communicate with others.  Why is this difficult for individuals with ASD?

Communication is both how you listen, respond to others on a daily basis.  Individuals with ASD often have trouble listening to conversations, and responding to others.

Pick the correct choice in response to this scenario:

You are in math class and the teacher tells you that you have to complete 3 assignments today, and you owe 2 assignments.  You don't understand what to do on ANY of them.  You are feeling overwhelmed.

A) Stay calm, ask the teacher to explain what you have to do.  If you need more help, you can ask to finish your work in Mrs. Zube's room.  When you get there you get to work right away so you can finish.

B)  Get mad, refuse to do your work, and walk out of class without telling anyone where you are going.

A) Stay calm, ask the teacher to explain what you have to do.  If you need more help, you can ask to finish your work in Mrs. Zube's room.  When you get there you get to work right away so you can finish.

Remember:  No teachers want to see you fail or get upset.  Its ok to ask for help!

300

Tell me all the students who enjoy playing video games, and who you think you would want to play with.

Individual responses.

300

Tell me how you would lose your points, and what this is meant to teach you.

You lose your points when you hit, yell, throw, or are disrespectful (purposely) to others.  By losing your points, even though it is upsetting it will help you remember not to do these things the next time you are upset. Your team reminds you of the tools, and skills you should be using to deal with frustrating situations every day.  They are ALWAYS there to help!

400

Explain what a private thought is.  Give an example.

A private thought is something that you keep to yourself (you can talk about it later with someone you trust if you need to).  Sometimes, you will have a thought that comes to you quickly about a situation that might not be appropriate to say.

Example:

A teacher asks if you need any help or if you understand the directions, and you say "I don't want your help. Get away from me."  or "You smell bad."

Instead, be sure that you are not saying the FIRST thing that comes to your head, but that you think of a more appropriate way say it.  (I don't need the extra help, thank you.)  Sometimes just staying quiet is ok too.

400

Explain what it means to socialize with others.  Why is this difficult for individuals with ASD?

Socialization is when you interact with others.  It is when you develop relationships, and how you engage with the people around you.  Individuals with ASD typically are very literal and impulsive with their interactions.  They also tend to enjoy being on their own.

400

Tell me what to do when:

You come into school exhausted.  You were up all night and couldn't sleep.  Now you can baily keep you eyes open and the last thing you want to do is classwork. You are easily upset and even people talking to you is incredibly frustrating.

Tell your teachers the situation. Everyone gets tired sometimes, but coming to school and doing your work is your responsibility.  Being tired, even though it is a very frustrating feeling is not an excuse to be in a bad mood towards others.  As long as you do you work each period, you can put your head down after you are finished.  Letting your teachers know how you are feeling will help them to make sure you have the help you need to get it done.  They are NOT trying to make you miserable, they are trying to make you better by teaching you responsibility and valuable life skills!

400

Which student enjoys helping his mom, watching his twin sisters, and going fishing with his dad?

Sal

400

Explain the carry over rule.

If you earn 15 points or more, you can carry over 2 points the next day.

500

Tell me 2 examples of a time when you should ask for help.

Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. You are working on skills that will help you grow to be a well rounded adult with healthy relationships.  You can ask for help when:

You are upset

You don't understand

You need a break

etc.

500

Explain what struggles an individual with ASD may have in regards to their behavior.

Individuals with ASD often struggle with repetitive, obsessive, and impulsive behaviors that can lead to very intense behaviors that they struggle to calm down from on their own.

500

Tell me which of these choices you should make in this situation:

I was in gym class, and I didn't like what another student said/did during one of our games.  I was mad, and I did things that I was not supposed to (yell, hit, throw). Mrs. Zube just erased all of my points, and told me that I was not following the rules and I was not being safe.  Now I don't get any of my free time at the end of the day!

A) Being upset is ok.  Hitting, yelling, throwing is not the way to handle ANY kind of frustration.  I need use my "tools" that help me calm down.  (deep breathes, go to the back room to take a break and put my head down until I am ready to talk it out, etc. )

B) Keep yelling, hitting, throwing until Mrs. Zube gives me what I want.

A) Being upset is ok.  Hitting, yelling, throwing is not the way to handle ANY kind of frustration.  I need use my "tools" that help me calm down.  (deep breathes, go to the back room to take a break and put my head down until I am ready to talk it out, etc. )

Our rules are not designed to punish.  Even as unpleasant as losing your free time choice is, it is a tool to teach you to remember which choices you should make when you feel like this in the future.  Everyone makes mistakes, but it is what you learn from your mistakes that matters.

500

Tell me what you think each student in our class right now will be doing this summer.

Individual response.

500

Tell me how many points you get each period IF you follow your rules.  Also, tell me what happens if you perform all of the tasks for that period (even if you don't want to do them), and you use your "tools"  to get through it.

You get 2 points each period for following your rules, and if you work yourself through it by using your "tools"  you can earn extra points.
