"An area extending from California to Alaska created a unique and rich culture. The Pacific Ocean provided for a marine economy. The ocean was full of fish, shellfish, and sea mammals. Its moist air assured an abundance of plant life, including the giant red cedar a source of shelter, clothing, and transportation. The mild marine climate made life less harsh than in other places. Large semi-permanent villages were found at the mouths of every river. The climate and abundant natural resources allowed the Coastal tribes to focus on cultural arts and ceremonial practices during the long, wet winter months. Elaborate ceremonies were a basic feature of coastal life." "The Washington Journey (7th grade)." Gibbs Smith Education. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 May 2017. .
