What is a compass rose?
A type of map that has rows and columns that form squares. The rows are labeled with numbers and the columns are labeled with letters.
What is a grid map?
There are seven of these -- North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Australia, Antarctica, and Asia.
What are continents?
A picture or drawing on a flat surface that shows the different parts of something.

What is a map key/legend?
A small, sphere shaped model of the Earth.
What is a globe?
There are five of these -- Atlantic, Artic, Pacific, Indian, and Southern.
What are oceans?
Earth's nickname, due to the amount of oceans/water on the Earth

A map that shows the government borders between countries, states, and counties/parishes.
What is a political map?
The earth is divided up into four of these -- northern, southern, eastern, and western.
What are hemispheres?
The imaginary line located at 0 degrees latitude. It runs around the widest part of the Earth.
What is the equator?
Scientists that study the Earth and the way living things use it.

A type of map that shows the location of bodies of water, mountain ranges, and other natural features of the Earth.
These imaginary lines run east and west. They measure the distance north and south of the equator.
What are Lines of Latitude?
The imaginary line located at 0 degrees longitude
What is the Prime Meridian?
When an object loses its original size and shape; the reason globes are more accurate than flat maps
What is distortion?
The directions that are in between the main directions -- northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest
What are intermediate directions?
A type of map that shows how many people live in a certain area of land.
What is a population map?
These imaginary lines run north and south. They measure the distance east or west of the Prime Meridian.
What are Lines of Longitude?
The imaginary line that the Earth rotates around
