How did the building of railroads impact the lives of American Indian tribes?

For American Indian tribes, the railroad was one of the worst changes to come to their communities. The building of the railroad removed tribes from their lands, destroyed natural resources, and caused large herds of animals normally hunted by tribes to migrate to new areas. The railroad also brought many more people west. Settlers came looking for new opportunities, jobs, and land. Conflict over land occurred between tribes and settlers. While one population benefited from the railroad, another population suffered because of it.

The loss of the bison is perhaps one of the greatest injuries the western tribes suffered. The American army and hunters traveling west killed thousands of bison during the 1800s. The Plains tribes needed the bison for food, clothing, fuel, and even tools. With the bison nearly gone, the Plains tribes were unable to meet their needs. The tribes became dependent on the government for food and supplies. This drastically changed their way of life.

How did the cattle industry modify the Texas environment?

The landscape and environment of Texas changed dramatically during the late 1800s. The cattle industry changed the landscape of Texas in many ways. Before the Civil War, the majority of cattle ranches were located in southern Texas. After the war, cattle ranchers realized that the land in western Texas was ideal for grazing and raising cattle.

Settlers began pouring into the frontier areas of Texas. This caused tension between the American Indians and new settlers along the frontier. Traditional hunting grounds used by the tribes of Texas became cattle grazing areas for ranchers and farmland for settlers. The overhunting of bison on the prairies changed the ecosystem and the lifestyle of American Indians of Texas.

Timber was cleared to build ranches and farms. The timber was used to build homes and businesses, but deforestation led to a loss of the natural habitat for many indigenous species. New towns were constructed near ranches, many of which grew into large communities and cities, including Amarillo and Kingsville.

The cattle boom eventually led to the use of barbed wire fencing across the open plains of Texas. At the beginning of the cattle boom, ranchers let their cattle roam and openly graze throughout the prairies. Farmers did not want animals to wander onto their land. So, farmers began to install fences around their farms to prevent cattle and wild animals from roaming through their fields and eating their crops.

Barbed wire fencing limited travel throughout the state. Cattle ranchers were forced to find new ways of moving their herds, which created more cattle trails. It also restricted the movement of the nomadic American Indian tribes of Texas and created many conflicts over access to natural resources. Texans continued to modify their environment to meet their needs in the coming years with the expansion of the railroad.
