It was a marsh, the water is dirty and not good to drink. There were disease carrying mosquitoes. People got sick and died. The winter brought harsh storm, which were bitterly cold.

This group of representatives met from 1619 until 1776. The members, or burgesses, were elected from each county in Virginia with each county sending two burgesses. The House of Burgesses is important because the ideas and leaders from this House helped bring about the American Revolutionary War. Their first order of business was to set a minimum price for tobacco.

What was the “Starving Time”, from 1609-­‐1610?  How did John Smith save the colonists from starvation?

The starving time” was the winter of 1609-1610, when food shortages, fractured leadership, and a siege by Powhatan Indian warriors killed two of every three colonists at James Fort. Captain John Smith became leader of the Jamestown Colony. He saved the colony by making a rule that anyone who did not work did not eat. This made the colonists plant food, and build shelters and fences to protect themselves from attack. Captain John Smith maintained a peace with the nearby Algonquian Indians.
