2.) There is a new band director for the band program at one of the district’s two elementary schools. This is not the teacher’s first job, but instead the teacher has worked for over 10 years gaining credentials and winning awards at other school districts in order to even be considered for this program. In this program, the teacher utilizes classic children’s band method books and literature to with the students so that they may have a strong foundation for the competitions they will compete in during middle school and high school. The students don’t seem to mind my teaching methods, and the parents are very supportive. Over 95% of our district’s population is Caucasian, and the median household income in our district is $76,031 so naturally, parents seem to have no problem buying students’ their instruments and paying for private lessons.

3.) This program has one teacher who is proud to be the band and choir director at a junior/senior high school that has one of the best student-to-teacher ratios in the country. There is very little teacher turn over in the school district as a whole, with most teachers living in the community and working in the school district for their entire careers. Even though the community is not rich (averaging $22,139 per capita income), its members are very involved with the school and its activities. Though the county is 77.4% Caucasian, they also have a significant population (22.1%) of Native Americans.

4.) The school district a beginning teacher is trying to get an elementary school general music teaching position in is very diverse neighborhood. The population is 77.4 Caucasian, 62.4% Hispanic, and 19.5% African American. The teacher speaks Spanish fluently and want to incorporate Hispanic musics into the classroom; however, with the average per capita income only being $18, 497, and the amount of homeowners (who pay property taxes) being low, the teacher doesn’t know if the district will have enough money to supply instruments the teacher wants to use in class for the large class sizes found in most of the schools.

5.) This community has a flourishing string program. Though many students see little future in academia (most want to be fishermen/women or work in the tourist shops when they grow up) they do enjoy orchestra a great deal. With 97.35% of the community being Caucasian, and most of those who are being of Scottish/Irish descent, many students have taken interest in the fiddling that is played at the tourist bars on the weekend. The orchestra director would like to get a fiddling group going, and perhaps bring in one of the local musicians as a guest artist to show the students how to fiddle.
