Fielding Situations
Runners on 1st and 2nd, no outs. Ground ball hit hard to the 3rd baseman's right.
What is: Step on 3rd for the lead out and throw to 1st (avoid the risky turn at 2nd).
You are on 2nd base. A line drive is hit toward the Shortstop. What do you do?
What is: Freeze (Don't get doubled off; wait for it to clear the infielder).
The Look-Back Rule: How many seconds/actions does the runner have to decide to go or return once the pitcher has the ball in the circle?
What is: One immediate motion (no "dancing" or stopping).
Runner on 1st, 0 outs. The batter shows bunt. Where is the 2nd baseman's responsibility?
What is: Covering 1st base.
Pop fly directly behind 2nd base (physical base), shallow outfield.
Who is the shortstop?
Runner on 2nd, 1 out. A sharp grounder is hit directly to the Shortstop. What is the SS's first move?
What is: Look the runner back to 2nd base before throwing to 1st.
You are on 3rd base with less than 2 outs. A fly ball is hit to medium-deep left field. What is your footwork?
What is: Tagging up with your chest facing the field, watching the catch over your shoulder.
There are runners on 1st and 2nd with 0 or 1 out. A pop-up is hit to the 2nd baseman. What rule is in effect?
What is: The Infield Fly Rule (The batter is out regardless of whether the ball is caught).
A "slapper" is up. The 3rd baseman is playing "Even" with the pitcher. What is the 3rd baseman watching for?
What is: The "Soft Slap" or bunt (If they swing away, the 3rd baseman must retreat).
High pop fly between the pitcher, catcher, and 3rd baseman.
Who is the catcher?
Bases loaded, 1 out. The catcher drops the third strike.
What is: The batter is automatically out (because 1st is occupied with less than 2 outs), but the ball is live. The catcher must touch home or tag runners.
You are on 1st. The batter hits a "tweener" to right-center field. What would you, as the runner, be doing?
What is: turn your body to the ball, freeze halfway.
A runner is hit by a batted ball while standing on 2nd base. Is the runner out?
What is: Yes (Unless the Infield Fly Rule was called, or it passed an infielder first).
Bases loaded, 1 out. The batter shows bunt late for a "Squeeze." Who has the play at home?
Who is: The Pitcher or 3rd Baseman (The catcher stays home).
Pop fly on the right-field line between 1st base and right field.
Who is the right fielder?
Runner on 1st. A bunt is popped up in the air. Should you catch it or let it drop?
What is: Catch it for the definite out, then think to pick off the runner on first if possible.
You are on 2nd base. The ball is hit in the dirt and gets past the catcher, but only by 5-10 feet. When do you go?
What is: When the ball goes "down and away," or the catcher has to turn their back to the field.
A fielder is waiting for a throw to make a tag, but blocks the entire path to the bag without the ball.
What is: Defensive Obstruction.
"The Wheel Play": The runner is on 2nd. The SS crashes to 3rd and the 2nd baseman covers 1st. Who covers 2nd?
Who is: The Center Fielder.
Pop fly between shortstop and center field with the shortstop backpedaling.
Who is the center fielder?
Runner on 1st and 3rd, 1 out. The batter hits a deep fly ball to center. The CF catches it. Who is the "Cut" for the throw to home?
Who is: The Shortstop (The 2nd baseman covers 2nd base to prevent the runner at 1st from moving up).
2 outs, runner on 3rd. The batter hits a grounder to SS. The runner at 3rd crosses home before the batter-runner is thrown out at 1st. Does the run count?
What is: No (A run cannot score on the final out of an inning if it is a force out).
A starter is subbed out in the 3rd inning. Can they return to the game?
What is: Yes, once (but they must return to the same spot in the batting order).
A runner is on 1st and 2nd. The batter bunts toward 1st. What should the first basemen attempt to do?
What is: tag the hitter running toward first and check the runner at third.
Soft blooper, shallow left field with runners on and middle infield playing shallow.
Left field has priority, but shortstop can call her off early and take charge with communication.
