OBJECTIVE:


Promote and protect the emotional health and well-being of our members in alignment with the Illinois Firefighter Peer Support “Make it Safe Initiative” and to make psychological support services available to our members when they confront potentially overwhelming stress.

  • Loss of life of a patient following extraordinary and prolonged expenditure of physical and emotional energy during rescue efforts by Fire Department personnel. 

  • Incidents that attract extremely unusual or critical news media coverage.

  • Any incident in which the circumstances were so unusual or the sights and sounds so distressing as to produce a high level of immediate or delayed emotional reaction. 

  • Several difficult incidents over a period of time.

  • Court subpoena or having to testify in court from a prior critical incident.

  • Any member requesting intervention.

The Fire Chief or their  designee shall assemble a group of EFD “Peer Supporters” from within the department that will be properly trained, clinically reinforced, and available to support our members.

If any member identifies a situation or stressor that has the potential to be outside the norm;

..they are strongly encouraged to notify a member of the in-house Peer Support Team.

The Peer Support Team will connect with...

...with any member who has experienced a situation that is beyond the normal scope of stress. Their primary goal is to provide confidential and continued peer support, as well as referral to additional resources such as the Department Chaplain, Evanston EAP, etc

Peer Support Team members will also meet with all new hires within?

the first 6 months of employment to make certain they are aware of the availability of the in-house Peer Support Team, external support services, and the “Make it Safe  Initiative.”

All members of the department, with the exception of FAO/QD, are required to have a minimum...

State of Illinois Class B (Non-CDL) license. New hires to the department shall have 18 months from the date of hire to meet this requirement.

RESPONSIBILITIES



All members should be aware of possible stress points that may occur in the course of our duties, but Company Officers and Incident Commanders are most responsible for identifying incidents that may qualify as critical incidents and may necessitate Peer Support and/or additional intervention services.

A member residing outside of Illinois must possess:


  • A similarly waived CDL license classifications as Illinois (e.g. Non-CDL Class A) OR

  • The driver’s license issued by his/her residency state that permits driving fire service vehicles AND that state maintains a reciprocity agreement that allows the member to operate emergency vehicles in Illinois, OR

  • If a member lives in a state that does not have such reciprocity agreements, he/she must possess a CDL commensurate with position as determined by the Fire Chief.

Examples of stressors could include but are not limited to:

-Serious injury or death of a Fire Department member or other emergency personnel.

-Mass casualty incidents.

-Suicide of a Fire Department member.

-Serious injury or death of a civilian during Fire Department operations 

-Death of an infant/child, or violence to an infant/child.
