“If we are careful, we can eat our meals without spreading food all over our faces. But not so the hairy man…If you peer deep into the moustachy bristles sticking out over his upper lip, you will probably see much larger objects that escaped the wipe of his hand, things that had been there for months and months, like a piece of maggoty green cheese or a moldy old cornflake or even the slimy tail of a tinned sardine.” (Roald Dahl, The Twits)

Rodeo clowns expose themselves to great danger every time they perform. When cowboys dismount or bulls buck them off, rodeo clowns jump in front of the bulls and motion wildly to get their attention. In this way rodeo clowns provide an alternate target, and in doing so protect the rider. Of course, this is a very dangerous thing to do. So you see, sometimes clowning around can be serious business.

Let them be as flowers,
Always watered, fed, guarded, admired,
But harnessed to a pot of dirt.
I’d rather be a tall, ugly weed,
Clinging on cliffs, like an eagle
Wind-wavering above high, jagged rocks.
To have broken through the surface of stone
To live, to feel alive
In the vast, eternal sky… (Julio Noboa, “Identity”)

Have you ever wondered how mountain bikes can ride so smoothly on rough surfaces? The reason for this is that mountain bikes have suspension systems. Suspension systems keep the wheels in continuous contact with the ground. This improves control and insulates the rider from changes in the surface. Suspension systems also reduce vibrations and make the ride more comfortable. Just don't get too comfortable and put your feet up because you still need those for peddling.

“Punish you?” Michael gawked at her. “I don’t punish you! I don’t care about you! I don’t care what you eat or how you dress or where you go or what you think! Can’t you just leave me alone?” He slammed down the glass, scraped his chair back from the table and ran out the door. (Cynthia Rylant, “Shells”)

According to the last US census, drivers 19 years old and younger represent only 5% of all drivers. Astonishingly, these drivers are involved in more than 12% of car accidents. This shows that teen drivers get in more accidents than their older and wiser counterparts. Sadly, teens make up more than 8% of drivers killed in car accidents. It doesn't have to be like this. We can prevent accidents and save lives by changing the minimum driving age. By raising the driving age to 21 years old, more teens will live to see their 20s. Doesn't that seem worth it? I'd rather have my teenage son or daughter groaning about the driving age then getting involved in a serious accident because he or she isn't ready to drive yet. Seems like common sense. What do you think?

Dorothea trembled while she read this letter; then she fell on her knees, buried her face, and sobbed. She could not pray: under the rush of solemn emotion in which thoughts became vague and images floated uncertainly, she could but cast herself, with a childlike sense of reclining, in the lap of a divine consciousness which sustained her own. “This time, to Felix’s surprise, it was Antonio who came out fast, charging across the boxing ring. Felix braced himself but couldn’t ward off the barrage of punches. Antonio drove Felix hard against the ropes. The crowd ate it up, cheering wildly. Felix tapped his gloves and commenced his attack anew. Antonio, throwing boxers’ caution to the winds, jumping in to meet him. Both pounded away. Neither gave an inch, and neither fell to the canvas…Bong! Bong! Bong! The bell sounded over and over again to end the round.” (Piri Thomas, “Amigo Brothers”)

I did not find it easy to sketch Mr. Yorke’s person, but it is more difficult to indicate his mind. If you expect to be treated to a Perfection, reader, or even to a benevolent, philanthropic old gentleman in him, you are mistaken. He has spoken with some sense and with some good feeling to Mr. Moore, but you are not thence to conclude that he always spoke and thought justly and kindly.

What is the main idea of the text?

A. The author struggles to describe Mr. Yorke’s personality and therefore gives up, leaving the reader with no clear picture of the man.

B. Mr. Yorke is best know to the reader for how kindly he treated Mr. Moore. It therefore is best for the reader to understand Mr. Yorke as a kind man.

C. The author feels he cannot well describe Mr. Yorke’s personality, but attempts to make sure that the reader knows that Yorke is not a kindly old gentlemen despite his actions toward Mr. Moore.

D. Mr. Yorke, despite being known as a kind man for his actions toward Mr. Moore, is actually more than that. He is generous with his money, just, and kind toward all around him.

C. The author feels he cannot well describe Mr. Yorke’s personality, but attempts to make sure that the reader knows that Yorke is not a kindly old gentlemen despite his actions toward Mr. Moore.
