Family & Marriage Laws

  • If a man takes a wife and does not draw up a contract, the woman is not a legal wife.

  • If a man divorces his wife who has borne him children, he must provide her with support and property for the children.

  • If a son strikes his father, his hands shall be cut off.

Property & Trade Laws

  • If a man rents a field and does not cultivate it, he must pay the owner for the produce as if he had farmed it.

  • If a builder constructs a house and it collapses, killing the owner, the builder shall be put to death.

  • If a man steals cattle or sheep, he must repay thirtyfold if from a temple or tenfold if from a private citizen.

Injury & Crime Laws

  • If a man destroys the eye of another man, they shall destroy his eye (“an eye for an eye”).

  • If a man breaks the bone of another man, his bone shall be broken.

  • If a man strikes a free-born woman and causes her to miscarry, he must pay ten shekels of silver.

Slavery Laws

  • If a slave says to his master, “You are not my master,” his ear shall be cut off.

  • If a man harbors a runaway slave, he shall be put to death.

Business & Wage Laws

  • If a man hires an ox and kills it through neglect, he must compensate the owner.

  • If a man hires a worker, he must pay him wages according to agreed terms.

How was the Assyrian king, Shamshi-Adad, different from the Babylonian king, Hammurabi? 

Shamshi-Adad was a dictator who ruled by fear and cruelty. Hammurabi ruled by a code of laws.
