The North had more factories than the South because of the rivers. The rivers down South were slow so they were better for transportation while the rivers in the North’s where fast moving and good for supporting factories. Also, the North didn't have rich soil so it was difficult for them to farm like the South. Thus, the only way the North could make profit was from factories.
