He served as president of the SBC for a total of 3 terms. He began a ministry called Love Worth Finding which he ran until his death in 2005. He had a great influence on returning the SBC to it’s biblical roots.

In this year, two separate events were pivotal in the solidification of the Southern Baptist convention. The adoption of the Cooperative Program effectively standardized the way in which local congregations could cooperate with the Southern Baptist national and state level conventions. It provided for giving to the convention and allowed for a more regular giving stream. The Baptist Faith and Message was adopted the same year, allowing for a more uniform approach to the mission of independent churches without compromising the individual statements of faith that may have existed within each church. It gave a common foundation for all churches to agree upon and to unify around within the denomination.

In 1995, the SBC voted to repent as a denomination for the evils of slavery that they had been associated with since their inception using this statement. Much of the need for change comes from the perception of slavery support as a key motivator for the creation of the SBC. The statement repents both of the acts of slavery committed and the lack of support shown by the SBC for civil rights causes. It was passed on a show of hands at the convention that was held in the Georgia Dome. This allowed the SBC to be taken more seriously in its theological stances against abortion and homosexuality but confessing and repenting of other sins that are clearly against scripture.

In this year, the First Baptist Association was founded out of a general gathering of pastoral leaders in churches around Charleston, South Carolina. Pastor Oliver Hart arranged the initial meeting. This association was modeled after the Philadelphia Baptist association but became the template for all future southern Baptist associations. It was also the first real vision given to the collaboration of churches for the furtherance of the gospel and gospel mission. This is a foundational piece of the creation of the SBC.

A lifelong scholar and dedicated teacher, he was the president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary from 1889-1895. He also served many years as a professor and was a pastor. He served as a chaplain to Confederate soldiers during the Civil War and was nationally known as a scholar. Many other institutes of higher education sought him as a professor and school president. He taught on preaching and was largely sought as a preacher as well. His connection to the Confederacy may make his contributions more controversial but by and large he had a positive impact on the SBC.

One of the first international missionaries sent by the Southern Baptist Convention to China. She mentored many other foreign missionaries, including Lottie Moon. She served as a missionary for 58 years before her death at the age of eighty. She was known for her passion to teach as a missionary to the people of China. Her focus on the ministry that God called her to had a positive impact on the SBC.

She was a woman of prayer and commitment, serving as a missionary to China for nearly 42 years. This included being imprisoned when the Japanese invaded China in 1937. She was dedicated to the gospel and to reaching the lost in China as a part of the China Inland Mission. She was mandatorily retired from the mission field at the age of 70 but continued to serve the SBC until her death at 99 years old.

He was a doctor and missionary to China for more than 15 years. He served in a medical hospital, Wuzhou, in China’s Guangxi province. His life was devoted to caring for the sick in the name of Jesus. He stayed in the field through World War II though many of his colaborers did not. He was martyred by the Chinese on claims of espionage. He lived a life filled with medical work that was born out of his intense love for people and for Jesus. He was martyred in 1952.
