MISC.
100
Define orbit
The path that a planet or moon follows around another object.
100
How any moon phases are there?
8
100
What causes the times of high and low tide to change every day?
The moon has to drag a huge amount of water across the earth's surface it does not take exactly 6 hours so the times change ecery day.
100
What are the solstices? Explain.
The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year and the first day of winter. The summer solstice is the longest day of the year and the 1st day of summer.
100
How long does it take for the earth to rotate once?
1 day or 24 hours.
200
Define axis
An imaginary line around which a plant or moon spins.
200
Name the phase: 3/4 of the right hand side lit up.
Waxing Gibbous.
200
Which direction do the high tides on earth face?
The always face directly at the moon or directly away from the moon.
200
What season is it in Australia when it is Winter here?
Summer.
200
How long does it take for the earth to revolve around the sun once?
1 year or 365 days.
300
Define rotate.
To spin in a circle around an axis.
300
Draw a picture of a 1st Quarter moon
The moon should have the left half shaded in.
300
What causes tides on earth?
The gravity of the sun and moon.
300
What part(s) of the earth has only 2 seasons? Explain.
The poles. Here the change and the directness of the sun and the length of the days is so extreme that they have 6 months of summer/daylight and 6 months of winter/darkness with no in between.
300
What type of eclipse is the most common? Explain.
Lunar eclipses are common because they can be seen from half the earth at once. Also the earth causes a huge shadow ifor the moon to pass through.
400
Define revolve.
To move in a circle around another object.
400
How long does it take for the moon to cycle through all 8 phases one time?
One month.
400
What is a spring tide? Why does it cause the tides to act the way they do?
The most difference between high and low tides. The sun earth and moon are in a straight line so they all work together. This allow the sun and moon to pull the tides very high and very low.
400
What part of the earth has no seasons? Explain.
Equator because the angle/directness of the sun and the day length doesn't change very much.
400
What are the equinoxes? When do they occur?
The equinoxes are when there is an equal amount of day and night. The are the 1st day of spring and fall.
500
Define Ellipse or elliptical
A oval shaped orbit or path which a moon or planet takes around an object.
500
How long does it take for the moon to rotate once?
1 month.
500
What is a neap tide? Why does it cause the tides to act the way they do?
A neap tide is when there is the least difference between the high and low tides. This happens because the sun and moon are at a right angle and working against one another so they can't pull the tide as high or low.
500
What causes the seasons?
The tilt of the earth causes a change in the length of the day and the angle/directness of the sun.
500
Explain the two types of eclipse.
Solar:The moon passes between the sun and earth. The moon casts a shadow on earth. Lunar: the earth passes between the moon and the sun. The earth casts a shadow over the moon.
