What is an IEP (Individualized Education Program)?
The special education teacher or service provider responsible for overseeing a student's IEP, coordinating all services, and serving as the primary point of contact between the school, the general education teacher, and the parents
What is a Case Manager?
Adjusting how students access learning based on their individual needs
What is differentiation?
An IEP must be reviewed and updated at least this often
What is annually?
Support staff who assist students and teachers in implementing IEP supports and facilitating access to the curriculum
What is a paraprofessional/instructional aide?
A plan to address challenging behaviors by teaching new skills and strategies
What is a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)?
A team made up of an Ed Specialist, Parent, Administrator, General Education Teacher, and any other specialized service providers
What is the IEP Team?
A support for the skill we are measuring, changing what the student is expected to learn (what the student learns)
What is a modification?
Parents must give this type of consent before an initial evaluation or the start of special education services
What is parental consent?
When students with disabilities are placed in a general education classroom instead of a separate, special education setting
What is mainstreaming?
This is a core component of special education that adapts instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities, ensuring their access to the general curriculum
What is Specialized Academic Instruction (SAI)?
This information is essential to a student's Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance, describing a student's strengths and needs, the foundation for all parts of the IEP
What is teacher feedback?
A support for any skill other than the skill we are targeting (how the studnent learns)
What is an accommodation?
How many calendar days are allowed to complete the initial assessment and hold the IEP meeting after the school receives the parent's signed consent to the assessment plan
What is 60 days?
A service delivery model where a general education teacher and a special education teacher share responsibility for planning, instructing, and assessing a diverse group of students in a single general education classroom
What is Co-Teaching?
The requirement that students with disabilities be educated with non-disabled peers to the maximum extent appropriate
What is Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)?
Team members on their phone/working on other things, using names of other students, and only sharing negative things about the student
What are 3 things that should not happen during IEP Meeting?
Grouping students based on readiness or needs, to tailor instruction
What is flexible grouping?
Excluding students with disabilities from activities, field trips, or electives, failing to document or report implementation of IEP supports, or sharing disability information with other students or unauthorized staff
What are examples of common legal pitfalls to avoid?
Educating students with disabilities alongside their non-disabled peers to the maximum extent appropriate
What is inclusion?
Ensures that students with disabilities receive a free public education that meets their unique needs
What is a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)?
A federal mandate under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that requires states and school districts to locate, identify, and evaluate all children with disabilities who may need special education and related services
What is Child Find?
Developmental, corrective, and other supportive services necessary to help a student benefit from special education. Examples: Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), Occupational Therapy (OT), Physical Therapy (PT), and counseling services
What is a Related Service?
This California court case ruled that intelligence (IQ) tests could not be used to place Black children into special education classes
What is the Larry P. v. Riles case?
Saying "A student with autism" instead of an autistic student is an example of this
