Evaluation
Even if a student is receiving classroom interventions or MTSS supports, this cannot be delayed or replaced, because the LEA must still fulfill its Child Find responsibilities.
What is an evaluation?
This team must include a minimum of 2 people that are responsible for evaluating a child with a suspected disability, including 1 special education teacher or other specialist that is knowledgeable about the suspected disability.
What is the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET)?
These must be completed at every marking period and with each IEP, except for initials, to track student growth, inform the PLAAFP, and serve as a baseline for future goals.
What is a progress report?
A student with a disability cannot be removed from school for disciplinary reasons for more than 10 consecutive school days without this.
What is a manifestation determination review?
A statement of the student's current academic strengths and weaknesses, current functional achievement levels, snapshot of student needs, and impact of the disability.
What are the Present Levels?
When a parent requests an evaluation, the school has 10 school days to respond with this document indicating whether they will proceed, and once consent is given, the evaluation must be completed within 30 school days.
What is a REED?
Parent must be fully informed of all information relevant to the activity, in their native language, where they understand and agree in writing, and that this is voluntary and can be revoked at any time.
What is consent?
This section of the IEP documents services, supports, or placements that were discussed but ultimately not selected, fulfilling a required component of Prior Written Notice under IDEA and demonstrating the team’s thoughtful decision-making.
What is Options Considered but Not Selected?
If a behavior is determined to be a manifestation of a child’s disability, the school must do this rather than applying the same disciplinary removal as for non-disabled students.
What is provide appropriate behavioral supports and continue FAPE?
Schools must start with this setting when planning a student’s placement, only moving to more restrictive options if supports like MTSS, co-teaching, and UDL aren’t sufficient, and must document the team’s data-driven decision.
What is the general education setting?
If the child is found eligible, parents have 10 school days to consent to services, which those services must begin within this many school days of receiving consent.
What is 15 days?
A student’s evaluation cannot be denied or delayed due to issues with this, as it may indicate an underlying disability and is considered a child find red flag.
What is attendance?
The obligation to provide FAPE extends to all eligible children, regardless of whether they attend public, private, or homeschool programs, as part of this federal law implemented in Michigan.
What is IDEA?
When a parent of the child expresses concern in writing, requests an evaluation, or school staff express specific concerns about a pattern of behavior.
What is Basis of Knowledge?
On an IEP, this section indicates how often data will be collected on a specific skill, not how often progress reports are sent home.
