The question ¿Qué hay de nuevo? is not always easy to understand for an English speaker. Explain this phrase and break it down one word at a time. What's a logical way to explain how it works?

What is, this phrase means what's new? but if we go word by word, we have: what is there of new? So, if we are asking what is there that's new? we can say "nada" (nothing much") or "regular" which means same as always.
