Naming & Circumcision
The meaning of the name "Jesus"
Savior
This word means coming back to life from death.
Resurrection
This is the number of main parts (services) in a typical Orthodox funeral.
Four
This is how many days Jesus appeared to His friends after He rose from the dead and before He went up to heaven.
40 days
This day after birth, the Jewish people circumcised and named baby boys long ago.
Eighth Day
When He raised Lazarus, Jesus showed this about His power and identity.
He has power over death and is God
Orthodox Christians pray for those who have died because of this ongoing connection in the Church.
We are still connected as one big Church family with God
These many days after Jesus' Ascension was Pentecost
10 days
These people can receive baptism in the Orthodox Church.
Boys and Girls
This happens to death in the final resurrection at the end.
It goes away for ever
In St. Luke 20:38, Scripture says this about God and the living and the dead.
God is not the God of the dead, but of the living — all are alive to Him
Jesus went up to heaven in the Ascension so that this divine Helper could come.
The Holy Spirit
This sacrament replaced circumcision for those who follow Christ.
Baptism
This happened to Lazarus later in life after Jesus had raised him from the dead.
He died again later
This hope is given to us by Jesus’ Ascension about how He will come again.
He will come again in glory (the Second Coming) the same way He went up
