Is technology making us lazy? The answer is in how we use technology. How many Netflix shows have you binge watched in the last month? How many hours do you spend hopelessly scrolling on the internet? According to Reader’s Digest, binge watching may be worse than we think. Technology put to poor use can have negative effects.

Read the prompt, and answer the following question:

Animals deserve to have laws which protect them from being harmed or abused. However, here in the United States some animals are used for food or experimented on for new products, such as medicine. An Animal Bill of Rights is needed to help stop animal misuse and mistreatment. When many people think of animals, they tend to think of animals that are pets, like a cat or a dog. However, many never think about the thousands of animals out there that are being used in unmeaningful ways. For example, mice, pigs, rats, hamsters, fish, or farm animals. Although I am not a vegan, I would still approve this bill.

What is the author’s main claim in the passage?

A Animals are used for testing medications.

B Animals also need protection.

C Animals make good pets.

D Animals should not be abused.

Read the passage below:

There are many reasons why we should ban the use of plastic bottles. A lot of facts were surprising to me but, in the long run, make sense. For example, it surprised me how many plastic bottles were used per year compared to how many are recycled. Americans alone used 50 billion bottles in 2006, but only recycled 38 billion. Not only is it destroying the planet, but it’s not helping our wallets either. Instead of just using tap water, which would be roughly $0.49 a year for eight glasses of water a day, we are spending $1,400 a year. There are cheaper and safer options for the environment. It makes me upset to see humans trashing the world. We’re supposed to take care of the Earth, so why aren’t we?

What is the author’s main claim in the passage?

A Limiting plastic water bottle use will help the United States save money.

B Limiting plastic water bottle use will improve the Earth.

C Limiting plastic water bottle use is cheaper and better for the planet.

D Limiting plastic water bottle use has traditionally been a difficult task.

What is C Limiting plastic water bottle use is cheaper and better for the planet.

dead cinders upon moss of ash;

I am broken at last,
I who had lived unconscious,
who was almost forgot;

What is the mood of the text?

The others went upstairs, a slow unwilling procession. If this had been an old house, with creaking wood, and dark shadows, and heavily panelled walls, there might have been an eerie feeling. But this house was the essence of modernity. There were no dark corners – no possible sliding panels – it was flooded with electric light – everything was new and bright and shining. There was nothing hidden in this house, nothing concealed. It had no atmosphere about it. Somehow, that was the most frightening thing of all. They exchanged good-nights on the upper landing. Each of them went into his or her own room, and each of them automatically, almost without conscious thought, locked the door….
