Based on Newton’s 3rd Law, if the car and truck below collide, which vehicle will exert more force?

Both vehicles will exert the same force!!

100

What is the difference between weather and climate?

Weather is the temperature and precipitation on any given day.

Climate is the average weather over a long period of time.

  1. What are convection currents?

What causes convection currents?

  1. Convection currents are big circles of moving gasses or liquids

Convection currents happen when hot gasses or liquids rise and cool gasses or liquids sink

100

Who named three laws of motion? (looking for last name. if you get the first name too, double points)

Isaac Newton

100

Where do I (Ms. Schur or Mr. Mieses) stand during arrival?

Across from the 8th grade bathrooms

200

What is the formula that calculates the “Force” in Newton’s 2nd Law?

Force = Mass  x Acceleration

200
  • What is it called when two air masses meet?

  • What happens when two air masses meet?

  • When two air masses meet, it’s called a front

Warm air rises above cool air. This often creates stormy weather.

Explain how the following processes change the landscape of the Earth:

  • weathering

  • erosion

  • deposition

  • Weathering breaks  down rocks.

  • Erosion moves pieces of rock away.   (see picture below)

Deposition is when rocks pile up.

200

How many star card quizzes do we have when we get back from break? (This was announced at the beginning of class)

Five

200

How tall am I?

5'11"

1)What happens to a bike rider who hits a big rock (or other obstacle) ?

2) This is an example of Newton’s 1st Law of Motion.  Explain Newton’s 1st Law of Motion

1) The rider would continue to move forward.

2) An object will continue to move in the same direction and the same speed - unless a force acts on it.

Most scientists think that climate change is the biggest threat to our environment.

How does burning fossil fuels cause global warming and climate change?

Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide

This carbon dioxide forms a “blanket” in the atmosphere that traps heat from the sun.      (preventing the heat from escaping back into space)

300

Fossil fuels and mineral ores are considered non-renewable resources.

What does non-renewable mean?

Non-renewable means it takes millions of years to form and it can run out when people use it.

300

Why is it warmer in the summer than in the winter in Massachusetts?

  • Summer is when our hemisphere is tilted toward the sun …

…so there is more direct sunlight on our part of the Earth - which makes it hotter.

300

What's my hometown?

Ms. Schur - Outside of Philadelphia

Mr. Mieses - San Francisco

1) If a man pushes off a boat as he  jumps to the land, what would happen to the boat?

2)This is an example of Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion.  Describe Newton’s 3rd Law.

  1.  The boat would be pushed backwards.  (*The opposite direction of the man)

2. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction

400

Name ALL 3 effects of global warming and climate change.

  •  Sea level rise

  •  Extreme weather

(ex. droughts +  stronger storms & wildfires)

 Mass extinctions

400

Oil, coal and natural gas are fossil fuels.

How do fossil fuels form on Earth?

Fossil fuels are formed when dead plants and animals are broken down, buried and squeezed by heat and pressure over millions of years.

1)Explain which team will win this tug-of-war

2) What is the net force of this action? Why?

1)The Green team will win because it is applying greater force.

2) The net force will be 300 Newtons, because when forces are going in opposite directions you subtract them.    (2500 -2200 = 300.)

400

Where did I go to college?

Ms. Schur - Brandeis

Mr. Mieses - University of Massachusetts Lowell

500
  1. In which direction will the wagon move?

  2. What will the net force be and why?

  1. The wagon will move to the right

The net force will be 18 Newtons  because when forces are going in the same direction you add them (10+8=18)

500

Explain the 2 ways that the ocean’s water influences the climate of places near the ocean.

  1. Places near the ocean have warmer winters and cooler summers

Ocean currents bring warmer temperatures to places near the poles and cooler temperatures to places near the equator.

500

What is the role of convection currents in the Earth’s mantle?

Convection currents cause:

  •  hot magma to rise

  •  then cool and sink

making Earth’s tectonic plates move and create mountains, earthquakes, etc.

500

How is the weather in a high pressure area different from the weather in a low pressure area?

High-pressure areas = clear skies and sunshine.

Low pressure areas= rain and storms.

500

What did I (Ms. Schur or Mr. Mieses) major in during college?

Ms. Schur - Biology

Mr. Mieses - Languages
