Earth's star (the sun) is this color.
Yellow
X axis: Temperature
Y axis: Luminosity or brightness
Kelvin
What causes the inward force on stars?
Gravity
All stars go through which two phases?
Main sequence and red giant
What is the shape of most planets' orbits in our solar system?
Circular
What is another name for "The Zone of Habitability"?
The Goldilocks Zone
How many solar masses is Earth's star?
1 solar mass
What is unusual about the x axis of the HR diagram?
The highest temperatures are on the left.
What unit of size do we use to measure stars?
Solar mass
What causes the outward force on a star?
Nuclear fusion
What is the final stage of life for medium size stars?
Neutron stars
Pluto does not orbit in the same way as other planets. It's pulled out of orbit when it crosses the path of this planet.
Neptune
Hydrogen and helium
By the time it "dies", Earth's star will have existed for this many years.
10 billion
On the HR diagram below, show where Red Giants would be found.
Upper right
What unit of brightness do we use to measure stars?
Number of suns
When the two forces in a star are balanced, what is that called?
Equilibrium
All stars start in a cloud of gas and dust called a:
nebula
The comet Borrelly's water exists as two different phases. What are they?
Ice and gas (vapor)
Explain the nuclear reaction (what goes in, what comes out).
Hydrogen goes in.
Helium, a proton, and energy come out.
The object in our solar system with the highest amount of gravity is:
On the HR diagram below, show where "main sequence" stars are found.
What is the main gas in a nebula?
Hydrogen
What life phase is a star in when their forces are balance?
Main sequence
At the beginning of a star's life, what is the main force?
Gravity
Our entire galaxy orbits around what structure?
A black hole
What is "extinction"?
When an organism whole species dies out, never to return again.
Besides our Sun, what star is closest to our solar system?
Proxima Centauri

YAY!
Explain WHY larger stars can make heavier elements like iron.
They have more gravity due to their size, so therefore they can push heavier elements together.
Explain WHY the largest stars become black holes at the end of their lives.
They have a lot of gravity, so when nuclear fusion stops, the enormous amount of gravity collapses the star into a black hole.
What is the shape of comet borrelly's orbit?
An oval
What star did you write your CER about?
Answers will vary!
