This uses the digits of data values to organize a data set. Each data value is broken into a stem (digit(s) on the left) and a leaf (digit(s) on the right) to show how data is distributed.
What is stem-and-leaf plot?
The study of data--how to collect it, how to summarize it and how to present it.
What is "statistics?"
The horizontal lines that connect the minimum to the lower quartile and the maximum to the upper quartile.
What are whiskers?
The average distance between each data value and the mean. (no acronyms)
What is the mean absolute deviation?
This is used in statistics to organize data into a list that shows how often that data piece occurs, using tally marks and/or numbers.
What is a frequency table?
This type of data is a count that can be broken down into discrete and continuous categories.
What is "quantitative?"
Includes the minimum, the lower quartile, the median, the upper quartile and the maximum.
What is a Five Number Summary?
This is not a measure of central tendency, but it describes how similar or varied the set of observed values are. Includes range, IQR, and MAD.
What are measures of variation or measures of spread?
Something that can be answered by collecting data and where there will be variability in the data.
What is a statistical question?
A group of numerical data values that are close together.
What is a gap?
A sampling where individual members of a population have/had an equal chance of being selected.
What is "random sample?"
A display showing the distribution of values in a data set separated into four equal-size groups.
What is a box plot (or a box-and-whisker plot)?
Mean, median and mode
What are the measures of central tendency? (Must get all three for any points)
A graphical display that shows the distribution of numeric data in intervals divided into ranges of data values.
What is a histogram?
A value (or several consecutive values) between the maximum and minimum observed data values, where no data occurs.
What is a skewed distribution?
The whole group from which a sample is taken.
What is "population?"
The median of the lower half of a data set and the median of the upper half of a data set.
What is the lower quartile? What is Q1? What is LQ?
AND
What is the upper quartile? What is Q3? What is UQ?
The measure of center that most accurately represents data with no outliers and where the data values are generally close together.
What is the mean?
A way to organize data along a number line where symbols above the number line represent the frequency of occurrence.
What is a line plot or a dot plot? (250 points for just one of the two answers)
Any distribution that is not symmetrical about the mean.
What is a bell curve?
A small quantity of the whole population that accurately reflects the larger population.
What is a representative sample?
The distance between the lower quartile and the upper quartile, containing 50% of the data values in the data set.
What is Interquartile Range (IQR)?
This measure of central tendency gives the most accurate picture of the data when the data is skewed.
What is the median?
